Stephen King's 'IT' Is Getting An Extended Director's Cut

Stephen King's IT novel is over 1,100 pages, making it difficult to bring his complete story to life for a feature film. Andy Muschietti's adaptation earlier this year only told a portion of the complete story, yet still necessitated scenes be trimmed down or completely omitted.

Bloody Disgusting reached out to the director about whether a Director's Cut of the film would ever be released, to which he confirmed, "Yes, but in a few months."

In the novel, a group of kids in Derry, Maine discover that a supernatural entity stalks the town, terrorizing children every 27 years. After facing off against the creature, they believe they have neutralized the threat, only to reunite 27 years later to try to settle the score once and for all.

This year's film focused solely on the young characters, with the tentative plan that a sequel would continue the characters' journeys into adulthood. The film's sequel wasn't officially confirmed until this film proved to be a financial success.

The upcoming Blu-ray release is slated to include many of those deleted scenes, but based on Muschietti's response, it sounds like we can also anticipate a version of the film where those scenes make their way back into the edit.

"There's a great scene, it's a bit of a payoff of the Stanley Uris plot which is the bar mitzvah, where he delivers a speech against all expectations," the director teased to Yahoo! Movies about scenes he was sad to cut. "It's basically blaming all the adults of Derry [the town in which the story unfolds], and it has a great resolution. … Maybe it will be in the director's cut!"

At the time, producer Barbara Muschietti confirmed, "We are going to do a director's cut. We were told this morning."

Andy pointed out there would "probably [be] an extra 15 minutes for hardcore fans" before teasing another scene that the director's cut will contain.

"After the spitting contest it escalates into something that is completely weird and irrelevant to the scene but is so funny," Muschietti confirmed. "Jack Grazer, who plays Eddie, does something that is completely bonkers."

The IT Blu-ray is available on January 9, 2018. The IT sequel will hit theaters on September 6, 2019.
