Star Wars: AARP Nominates 'The Last Jedi' as Best Picture at "Movies for Grown Ups" Awards

AARP — the nonprofit organization focused on the elderly — has nominated Star Wars: The Last Jedi for Best Picture in AARP The Magazine's annual Movies For Grown Ups Awards, as reported by the Associate Press.

AARP's nominees for Best Film include Academy Awards frontrunners Lady Bird, Get Out, The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Up for Best Actress are Meryl Streep (The Post), Annette Bening (Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool), Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul), Salma Hayek (Beatriz at Dinner) and Frances McDormand (Three Billboards).

In the running for Best Actor are Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.), Steve Carell (Last Flag Flying), Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) and Tom Hanks (The Post).

The ceremony, held February 5 in Los Angeles, will also see veteran actress Helen Mirren receive a career achievement award. The special will air on PBS' Great Performances on February 23.

Disney expressed interest in campaigning for Academy Award recognition for Last Jedi leads Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill, and the film has been submitted for consideration in a variety of technical categories.

John Williams' The Last Jedi score is among the film scores in contention to land a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Score. The Academy unveils its official nominees January 23.

The Last Jedi crosses $600 million domestically this weekend, with the Disney-produced blockbuster expected to end its global box office haul with $1.3 billion.

Forbes' report says such numbers puts Jedi ahead of Disney's animated Frozen to become the eighth highest-grossing movie of all time, just behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

The latest Star Wars installment is the biggest domestic earner of 2017, but its international numbers puts it in fifth place behind The Fate of the Furious ($1.01 billion), Wolf Warrior 2 ($867 billion), Despicable Me 3 ($770 million), and Beauty and the Beast ($759 million).

The Last Jedi was recently pulled from Chinese theaters after performing "much worse" than expected by Chinese theater owners.

Star Wars has never been huge in that territory — The Force Awakens earned $124 million and Rogue One brought in $69 million — and Last Jedi continues the trend with a poor less-than-$50-million Chinese take.

Disney will release The Last Jedi on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray disc in March, the home release boasting two hours of bonus content including deleted scenes.
