A cinematic cult classic will be getting remade for the modern era with Ryan Reynolds starring and producing a new film based on the board game Clue.

The movie will be the first under Reynolds' new production deal with 20th Century Fox that was just announced today.

Clue will be produced under Reynolds' Maximum Effort banner, which just signed a 3-year deal with Fox. Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will handle the script. Because Clue is owned by Hasbro, Maximum Effort will be working with the toy company's Allspark Pictures film division.

The announcement from Deadline states that this is a huge deal for Fox brass, with CEO Stacey Snider and Emma Watts championing the deal, especially after the massive success of Deadpool. That movie's $783 million box office haul earned it the distinction of being the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time.

The Deadpool sequel is on the studio's docket for later this year, bringing the Merc With The Mouth back to movie theaters alongside the cinematic debut of Cable. Josh Brolin will be portraying the time-hopping mutant, and the movie is expected to serve as a launching point for a future X-Force franchise.

Of course all of these plans could be tossed aside once Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets is completed in 2019, but at this point it appears like it's business as usual for both companies. So don't expect any X-Men characters to pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon.

While movies based on board games aren't very popular, few have been as well received as the original Clue. The 1985 film starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, and Christopher Lloyd among others. Curry portrayed the mysterious butler Wadsworth, while the other cast members all play characters from the game.

The movie even had three different endings for movie theaters, with each venue given one of the three. While it did poorly at the box office and was subject to mixed reviews, it has since gone on to achieve a cult status.

Little is known about Reynolds' take on the franchise, but we'll learn more as development of the movie starts to move forward.

The Untitled Deadpool Sequel premieres in theaters on May 18th.
