You heard right. If you are over in Japan, then you can prepare yourself to see plenty of STD campaigns in the near future that feature Sailor Moon. In the past year, sexually transmitted diseases have increased exponentially in Japan, and syphillis is at the top of the list. In order to combat the growing problem, Japan is looking to recruit Sailor Moon for PSAs, and the scouts have plans to get citizens tested.

Surely, creator Naoko Takeuchi could not have imagined her magical girls would be used in such a way. Last November, the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare announced the heroine would help tackle the STD epidemic, and her first campaign is about to get underway. Major cities will be inundated with condoms and pink leaflets filled with STD prevention tips which feature Sailor Moon's face. Posters will also be posted around government offices and other buildings which stress the importance of testing.

For example, Sailor Moon can be seen on one of the leaflets riffing off her iconic catchphrase about punishing baddies. The paper has the hero telling citizens, "If you do not get tested, you will be punished." So, no comment on that.

In the U.S., Sailor Moon is also making a resurgence, but it has nothing to do with STDs. Later this month, the first Sailor Moon movie will be released into theaters for a limited screening event.
