Netflix's live-action adaptation of Death Note is set to debut later this month. But before it does, Netflix has just unveiled a new look at one of the film's most-anticipated characters, L.

The still shows the detective, who is portrayed in the film by Lakeith Stanfield, perched in a chair with computer screens in the background. You can check out the still below.

While the casting of Stanfield - best known for his past roles in Selma and Get Out - surprised many Death Note fans, this new still gives several major allusions to the source material. L's posture in the photo mirrors the classic pose seen throughout previous Death Note adaptations, while the candy strewn across the table in front of him hint at his love for desserts.

For fans who are skeptical about Stanfield's portrayal of L, director Adam Wingard recently hinted that it will be a new - but warranted - adaptation.

"Ultimately the personalities of the characters a quite a bit different." Wingard explained. "L isn't the same. There are a lot of similarities — he likes candy, sometimes he romps around with his shoes off. Those kinds of things, but at the end of the day the take on L and the escalation of his character is very different. He's still a weirdo."

What if you had the power to decide who lives and who dies? We suggest you obey the rules. Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone's name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

Death Note will be available to stream on Netflix beginning August 25, 2017.
