I can't say that I know much about ocarinas outside of The Legend of Zelda, but I do recall seeing various attempts at building an electronic version of this ancient wind instrument over the years. Purists might want to stick with standard Zelda- themed Ocarinas, but I have to imagine that an electronic version would offer some convenient benefits. It appears that we're about to find out.

ThinkGeek has developed an officially licensed Legend of Zelda Electronic Ocarina of Time, which I can only assume will appear in the highly anticipated sequel, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time II: Electric Boogaloo.

The Electronic Ocarina of Time features two modes: Classic Mode unlocks a hidden song when you play the corresponding 6 button tune. Free-Play Mode allows you to create whatever melodies you like.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though there is any sort of volume control or headphone jack - which seems like an oversight. Then again, this plastic electronic Legend of Zelda ocarina is only $30, so a lack of features isn't all that surprising. I bet it would be a good starting point for a mod though.
