SCI FI Channel has announced a new series called Caprica which will be a prequel to the Battlestar Galactica series.  SCI FI has initially ordered twenty episodes of the series including a two-hour pilot, and the series is slated to premiere in 2010.  Production on the series will begin in the summer of 2009 in Vancouver.  Executive producers on the series are Ronald D. Moore, David Eick and Remi Aubuchon.  Writers are Aubuchon and Moore, while Jeffrey Reiner is the director.

Caprica will star Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker.  The series is set in a time fifty years before Battlestar Galactica and follows two rival families named the Graystones and the Adamas.  The two families live in the world of the 12 Colonies, which is a world of developing new technology like artificial intelligence and robotics.  This new technology will eventually result in the creation of the Cylons.

“Caprica will build on Battlestar Galactica’s acclaimed legacy of gripping drama and extraordinary characters,” says Dave Howe, who is President of the SCI FI Channel.  “It’s the beginning of a brand new epic saga that will appeal to both new viewers, totally unfamiliar with the Battlestar franchise, as well as existing loyal and passionate Battlestar fans.”

“Ron, David and Remi have created an amazing series with thought-provoking storytelling that deals with a world very similar to our own. It’s definitely not as dark as Battlestar, but like that show, this series has smart, dimensional characters who grapple with issues of love, sex and politics from a world in transition,” says Mark Stern, who is Executive Vice President of Original Programming for SCI FI Channel.

The Caprica series begins with the development of the first cybernetic life-form node or Cylon by the Graystones, who are owners of a large computer corporation.  Joseph Adama, who is played by Esai Morales, opposes the experiments being done by the Graystones.  Joseph Adama is also a civil liberties lawyer and the father of future Battlestar commander William Adama.
