Super Bowl Special: Football Comic Book Fumbles
In order to celebrate Super Bowl 43, Comicbook.com decided to compile a list of all the great football comic books for comic book fans. Since reading comic books and watching football are American traditions, one would expect there to be a lot of great comic books about football.
Unfortunately, there are surprisingly few football-themed comic books, and reading the ones that do exist is akin to watching a Super Bowl where the game is a blowout by the end of the first quarter. If only football comic books had multi-million dollar ads, then maybe they would be a bearable read.
Heroes TV Marathon On G4
On Sunday, the world’s attention will turn to the football heroes playing in the Super Bowl. On Saturday, TV viewers can gear up for the big game by watching a marathon involving another type of hero. The G4 network will be airing a thirteen hour marathon of NBC’s Heroes TV show.
Lost Creators Fool Everyone
On Wednesday, the creators of Lost pulled off one of the greatest fake outs in television history. The week before, I reported that British actor Tom Connolly was joining the cast of Lost for a pair of episodes as a character named “Jones”. One of the episodes in question, titled Jughead, appeared this past Wednesday on ABC and, as reported, the actor appeared in the episode. But, his character’s name sure wasn’t Jones!
Lost Spoiler Alert!
El Zombo Fantasma Joins Growing Ranks Of Comic Book Movies
Remember when only comic books featuring long established characters were optioned for movies. With the success of such movies as Wanted and Hellboy, studios are no longer afraid to take a chance on a comic book that might be relatively unknown to the public at large. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Dark Horse Comics has announced that their hit El Zombo Fantasma comic book will join the ranks of upcoming comic book movies.
Death Ray Films and Maya Entertainment are teaming up in order to adapt El Zombo Fantasma to the big screen. The movie will be produced under the Death Ray Films banner, which was recently formed by Chris Patton, Kevin Munroe and Robert Sanchez. El Zombo Fantasma was created by David Wilkins and Kevin Munroe. In addition to the live action feature film, Death Ray Films and Maya Entertainment also plan to create a new animated series based on El Zombo.
Savage Dragon Endorses President Barack Obama One Last Time
After three sold out printings of Savage Dragon #137, it was beginning to look like Savage Dragon might wind up endorsing Barack Obama for President throughout his entire first term in office. However, Image Comics and Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen have announced that the fourth printing of the landmark Barack Obama endorsement issue of Savage Dragon will be the final printing.
“While we sold out some time ago, we’ve been receiving an awful lot of letters from fans and retailers alike demanding another printing,” Erik Larsen said. “This fourth - and definitely final, I might add - printing commemorates the very first time a superhero has openly nominated a real-life candidate for Presidential office. It’s been flattering to receive such attention and I hope everyone who’s bought a copy sticks around for the rest of the series, especially #145’s relaunch!”

Gaiman’s Newbery Medal Brings The 1950’s Comics Scare Full Circle
While he didn’t win for his work in the comics, Neil Gaiman’s prestigious John Newbery award gave the industry a boost of long deserved credibility. On January 26th, the American Library Association awarded Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book as the recipent of the 2009 Newbery Medal for the most outstanding children’s book. This is something that never would have happened 50 years ago.
In the 1950’s, parents, churches, and other social groups blackballed comic books, staging protests and forcing kids to burn their comic books. This resulted in anyone who worked in the industry having either to work in anonymity or face public scrutiny. Many of those who worked in comics at that time did so because it paid much better than the more respected field of children’s literature. But should someone with a work history in comics have a desire to write a childrens book, libraries and book publishers would have either vetoed the project or protested its release and forbid it a place on their shelves.
Lost – Jughead Episode
On the “Jughead” episode of Lost, Desmond search for a woman who he thinks could be the key in helping the castaways still on the island. As revealed on the premiere of Lost, the castaways that remained on the island are stuck being moved erratically through time.
After a group of castaways traveled to the hatch, Daniel Faraday stayed behind and secretly talked to Desmond in the past. Even though Faraday had told Sawyer that there was no use in trying to change the past, Faraday also told Desmond that he was special and the rules didn’t apply to him. Faraday instructed Desmond to remember their conversation and to contact his mother. In the future, Desmond, who was in bed with Penny, suddenly woke up and remembered Faraday’s instructions.
