On the Hunt: Comic Book Show Visitors Talk With Us!

March 31, 2009 · Posted in Comic Books · 2 Comments

In our interview with Charlotte ComiCon organizer Rick Fortenberry, he indicated that a big part of his motivation for devoting his time and energy to organizing these shows was simply the love and growth of his favorite hobby: comic book collecting. In talking with a few of the over 350 people who attended Sunday’s show at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina, Fortenberry can take pride in a job well done.

“We love comic conventions,” commented Kelly and Jeremy Dale, “We go to a lot of the bigger shows, but as smaller shows go, this one has a lot of interest, good foot traffic and the crowd’s a pretty nice size.” Jeremy also told us that as a creator himself, having done previous work with Image Comics and some work on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe, he was maybe looking for a show to do in the future as an artist.

Dollar Bin Discoveries: Whirlwind Says the Darndest Things!

March 31, 2009 · Posted in Captain America, Marvel Comics · Comment

Anyone who groaned their way through the egregiously bad Batman and Robin remembers the horribly ‘punny’ dialogue of Mr. Freeze, played with a range of emotions from A to B by Arnold Schwarzenegger. While this was unique to the overall movie franchise, comics themselves have been home to some especially unfunny plays on words over the years, especially from ‘gimmick’ villains.

And that brings us to today’s Dollar Bin Discovery. Whirlwind and his new friend Trapster, formerly the gloriously named Paste-Pot Pete, have always existed on the lower rungs of B-list villains in the Marvel Universe, and if this issue of Captain America is any indicator, well, that may be a good thing. Whirlwind with his ability to spin fast like a top and Trapster with his various and strange traps and glues, have usually found themselves aligned with other groups of villains. Here they are on their own. How do they fare? Let’s find out!

Heroes Into Asylum Recap: Claire Rules At Drinking Games

March 30, 2009 · Posted in Heroes, TV · 1 Comment

After a couple of fantastic episodes, Heroes falls a little flat with “Into Asylum.”  As always, there are a few stories woven throughout the episode, so let’s get to it.  Claire and Nathan have escaped to Mexico, which is outside the long arms of Agent Danko.  They have just enough money for a cheap, sleazy motel and a meal or two. After checking in, Claire goes for a walk.  Later, Nathan is sitting at a cantina when Claire comes up and plunks down a wad of cash.  She pawned a necklace from HRG.  Nathan grabs the money and says he’s going to turn it into more.  He walks over to a group of college kids and starts shooting tequilla.

Spider-Man Musical To Have A Rock n’ Roll Circus Theme And New Villain

March 30, 2009 · Posted in Spider-Man · Comment

The New York Post is reporting that the upcoming musical, Spider-man: Turn Off The Dark, will be set to a “circus rock-n-roll drama.” The announcement came on Friday from show director, Julie Taymor, during a presentation with ticket brokers.   Also in attendance for the meeting were U2’s Bono and The Edge, who offered samples of several of the musical’s songs they had written thus far.

During the meeting, a video presentation showed many of the show’s set designs and villains who are to appear in the Spider-Man Broadway show. Among the list of villains are Kraven the Hunter, The Lizard, and an entirely new villain created just for the musical, named Swiss Miss. This female villain is a dominatrix with an affinity for extremely sharp knives.  Taymor also hinted at a special guest villain to appear in the musical.

On The Scene At Charlotte ComiCon!

March 30, 2009 · Posted in Comic Books · 1 Comment

Rick Fortenberry knows a few things about running a comic book show. After running his first show almost 20 years ago, Fortenberry, along with business partner David Hinson, started up the Charlotte ComiCon in 2002, after Fortenberry had taken 2001 off from the show circuit. That first Charlotte, North Carolina show, “was small but exciting. We moved to a bigger room as the show continued to expand, but we’ve stayed in this hotel (The Crowne Plaza), over the years,” Rick said. When asked about his experience in working with this hotel, which has gone through several name changes, Fortenberry described the experience as, “Wonderful. They have been very helpful and the room set up is perfect or as close to perfect as you can get. It’s one of the best experiences I’ve had.”
