Lost – The Story Of The Oceanic 6 Episode

April 22, 2009 · By Ty Blake · Posted in Lost, TV

ABC is promoting this week’s episode of Lost as an all-new Lost special, but from last week’s preview it looks suspiciously like an episode of repackaged clips from previous shows.  Of course, I guess technically even if it is scenes that have been shown before, they have been repackaged in an all-new way.

According to an ABC promo, Lost: The Story of the Oceanic 6 will both bring new viewers up to date and also be illuminating to current viewers.  The episode promises to detail what happened to the Oceanic 6 and the remaining island survivors during the three years after Ben moved the island.

As regular viewers already know, the Oceanic 6 consists of Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and Claire’s son Aaron.  After the Oceanic 6 escaped the island, they made up a lie about what really happened in order to protect the remaining island survivors.

Meanwhile, the remaining island survivors had to deal with violent shifts through time.  John Locke left the island and assumed the identity of Jeremy Bentham in an effort to end the time rifts.  Also, Jack and Ben had to convince the Oceanic 6 to return to the island in order to save those left behind.

The Lost: Story of the Oceanic 6 special airs on Wednesday, April 22 from 9:00 PM to 10:02 PM ET on ABC.

[...] ComicBook.com has a preview of tonight’s episode riffing on the whole misleading advertising thing with ABC calling the clip show “an all new episode.” I routinely have a similar frustration with another of my series, Survivor, which tries even harder to dupe audiences than Lost does. Survivor’s game is to show a series of new clips in the preview seeming to set up new stories (when in fact they’re just background footage of stuff that happened episodes back.) And despite the fact that the clip show covers all of the contestants who have been kicked off so far the preview only focuses on those who are still in the game. Sure, they’re trying to capitalize on fans’ passion about the people still in the game but it’s at least as true that if they showed people who have already been kicked off it would alert fans to the misleading nature of calling it an all new episode. With both Lost and Survivor the goal seems to be to get fans to tune in for the show expecting an episode that moves the story forward only to discover that they’ll have to wait another week. Apparently the fans are then supposed to say, “Well, I already gave up my evening and ordered a pizza. It’s too late to do anything else now. I might as well watch the clip show.” Still, if the producers are counting on the fact that the hardcore fans won’t abandon the series over anything so short term as a bait-and-switch they’re probably right in the overwhelming majority of cases. But the hardcore fans are more likely to know the scoop beforehand.  It’s people like my family members who don’t think of Lost until the night it’s on who are most likely to get caught off guard, and they could get turned off eventually. An all-new Lost special!!! Wow! I can hardly wait! Thats BS. Lost does this a lot. “Lost”, the TV show is scheduled Wed. nights at 9, so if I turn on my TV on Wed. night at 9 pm, should’nt “LOst”, the show, be on??!!! If they want to do a special then air it on Sundaqy afternoons instead of ads for Flo-B’s and Sham-Wow. (Sorry Vince, but you’re a tool)

If you can’t produce a whole season, then make the season shorter! Don’t mistreat your diehard fans to this bogus re-cap treatment. I’ve already seen it, it ain’t new. Its a repeat, and a disjointed one at that.

Hasn’t this episode already been on one time this season? I recall seeing the exact same episode of “The Oceanic 6″ earlier and I’m not talking about just clips from shows. This was already an episode!

    I second that! BS!!!

It was lame. I “lost” an hour watching something I’d seen before, in the hopes that they’d throw in at least a few minutes of new footage. They really want to do something special to fill a slot? Pull together an hour of outtakes, or scenes that hit the cutting room floor. Something of that nature would at least warrant the special tag.
