“The Variable” episode of Lost kicks off with Desmond being rushed into a hospital. Penny waits in the lobby and comforts their son. Suddenly, Eloise Hawking shows up with news that it might be her son’s fault that Desmond was shot. When Penny asks if her son is Benjamin Linus, Eloise responds that her son is Daniel Faraday.
Flashback to thirty years earlier, Daniel Faraday is getting off the submarine on the island. Miles takes Faraday to meet Jack, and Faraday quizzes Jack on how he got back to 1977. When Jack says Faraday’s mother convinced them to get on a plane because it was their destiny, Faraday replies that she was wrong and that they didn’t belong here at all.

Back in the real world, a young Daniel Faraday is playing the piano. Faraday’s mother, Eloise Hawking, approaches and quizzes him on if he knows what destiny is. Eloise tells Faraday that his gift is his mind, so there is no more time for distractions like playing the piano.
Back in 1977 on the island, Faraday rushes off in a jeep. Jack goes and tells Sawyer and Juliet that Faraday is back. Sawyer tells Jack that Phil found a tape of him and Kate taking the kid out to the hostiles. Sawyer opens the closet and reveals Phil all tied up.
Faraday visits a site where workers are drilling underground. Faraday tells Dr. Chang that he needs to order the evacuation of the island. Faraday says that one of the workers is on a stretcher because of the electromagnetic activity unleashed by the drilling.
Faraday tells Dr. Chang that in about six hours there is going to a similar accident at the Swan station that is going to be catastrophic. Faraday shows Dr. Chang some equations in his journal, then he tells Dr. Chang that Miles is his son. Faraday tells Miles that he’s just making sure that his father does what he’s supposed to do.
Back in the real world, Faraday is graduating from college, and he introduces his girlfriend to his mother, Eloise Hawkings. Eloise insists that just her and Faraday go out to eat. At lunch, Eloise tells Faraday that the women in his life will only be hurt. Faraday says that he has a research grant offer from Charles Widmore. Eloise gives Faraday a present and tells him good luck. The present is a book with an inscription.

Back in 1977 at DHARMA camp, Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Juliet, Hurley, and Jin discuss what they should do. There is a knock at the door, and it is Faraday and Miles. Faraday asks if anyone knows where he can find the hostiles. Faraday explains that one of the hostiles is his mother, and she is the only person on the island that can get them back to where they belong.
Back in the real world, Faraday is watching a news report on Oceanic Flight 815 being found at the bottom of the ocean. Someone knocks at the door. It is Charles Widmore. Faraday says he has a condition that affects his memory, but Widmore says they’ve never met. Widmore says he came to offer Faraday a new opportunity. Faraday starts crying about the plane crash on TV. Widmore tells Faraday that the plane crash at the bottom of the ocean was just an elaborate fake that he put there.
Widmore tells Faraday that he wants to send him to the island, where the Oceanic Flight 815 survivors are. Widmore says that the island will heal Faraday. Widmore also reveals that he’s old friends with Faraday’s mother.
Back in 1977 at DHARMA camp, Jack appeals to Kate to take them to the hostiles. Juliet tells Kate the code for the fence. Faraday asks Miles to drive them, but Miles tosses the keys to Faraday. Jack, Kate, and Faraday leave, but the Sawyer, Juliet, Hurley, and Miles stay behind.
Before they leave, Daniel Faraday goes over to a young Charlotte on a swing. Faraday tells Charlotte to get on a submarine and leave the island with her mom when Dr. Chang asks. While Jack, Kate, and Faraday are arming themselves, Radzinsky and some other DHARMA members show up. A gun fight ensues, and Faraday is wounded on the side of his neck. Jack shoots a fuel barrel, which blows up, and allows them time to escape.
Back in the real world, an adult Faraday is playing the piano, when his mother enters the room. Eloise tells Faraday that it is very important that he accept Mr. Widmore’s opportunity. Eloise tells Faraday that the island could make him better, which would leave him free to continue on with his work. Faraday agrees to go to the island in order to make his mother proud.
Back in 1977 on the island, Jack, Kate, and Faraday arrive at the pylons. While Jack tends to Faraday’s wound, Faraday reveals that this is their present and any one of them could die.

Back at DHARMA camp, Sawyer and Juliet get ready to leave for the beach. Radzinsky tells Sawyer that the new recruits shot him. Radzinsky hears a knock from the closet, and opens the door to find a tied up Phil. Radzinksy orders Sawyer and Juliet to get down on the ground.
Back in the jungle, Jack asks Faraday why his mother was wrong. Faraday says that the workers at the Swan station are about to drill into a massive pocket of energy. Faraday says that because of this one accident, the DHARMA people are going to spend the next twenty years pushing a button in the hatch to keep the energy at bay. One day Desmond is going to fail to push the button which will cause the Oceanic Flight 815 plane crash.
Faraday tells Jack that they are the variables in the equation and that they can change destiny. Faraday says he plans to detonate a hydrogen bomb to destroy the energy under the Swan, which will prevent the Oceanic Flight 815 plane crash from ever happening.
Back at the hospital, Eloise tells Penny that Desmond has become a casualty in a conflict that has become bigger than them. Just then, a couple of nurses come out and tell Penelope that Desmond is in the recovery room and doing fine. Desmond tells Penny that he promised her that he would never leave her again.

Eloise leaves the hospital, and Charles Widmore appears and asks Eloise if Desmond is alright. When Eloise says Penny is inside, Widmore says his relationship with his daughter is something that he had to sacrifice. Eloise talks about sending her son back to the island, and Widmore says Faraday is his son as well.
Back in 1977 on the island, Jack, Kate, and Faraday find the camp of the hostiles. Faraday walks into the middle of the camp, pulls his gun, and asks to speak to Eloise. Faraday tells Richard to take him to Eloise, and then he asks Richard where the hydrogen bomb is. Someone shoots Faraday in the back. It is Eloise Hawking. Faraday tells Eloise, “You knew this was going to happen, and you sent me here anywhere.” When Eloise asks who he is, Faraday tells Eloise that he is her son. Then, Faraday dies. At least, Faraday looks dead, but death has a way of not always being permanent on the island.
