Fringe Finale: There’s More Than One Of Everything

It’s the finale of the first season of Fringe. Nina Sharp has been shot. Walter Bishop is missing. David Robert Jones is back. And Olivia Dunham is on a mission to find William Bell.

It turns out Walter Bishop is with the mysterious bald-headed man known as the Observer. Walter is visiting a grave. Meanwhile, Nina Sharp is recovering in the hospital. David Robert Jones was behind the attack on Nina, and he took a very powerful energy cell out of her robotic arm. Nina promises to set up a meeting between Olivia Dunham and Robert Bell if Olivia can stop Jones.

The question is not what William Bell can do with the energy cell, but what he can’t do with the energy cell. David Robert Jones is dying from the effects of his past teleportation, and his face is wrapped in bandages. Jones puts the energy cell into a device that he uses to attempt to open a gateway to another dimension on a busy street. He succeeds in pulling half a truck through from the other dimension before the gateway closes.

Walter Bishop and the Observer are on a beach. The Observer gives Walter a silver dollar. Meanwhile, Nina Sharp is out of the hospital, and she and Agent Broyles are looking for Walter. Nina uses the resources of Massive Dynamic to locate a security camera recording of Walter, and Peter Bishop recognizes the location and figures out that Walter is on the way to an old family beach house.

Agent Dunham and Agent Francis are investigating the scene of the half truck incident. Agent Francis is confused because after checking the VIN number it turns out that the truck was never manufactured. Meanwhile, Peter has found Walter at the beach house. Walter is looking for something.

David Robert Jones is at a soccer field. Flash forward to Agent Dunham and Agent Francis on the scene. Witnesses saw a simmer of light, then a soccer kid hit the light. The kid was cut in half.

Olivia Dunham maps out all the unusual occurrences over the last several years. She notices a pattern pointing to the two spots where Jones attempted to open a doorway to an alternate universe.

At the beach house, Walter Bishop has finally found what he was looking for. It’s a device for closing a portal to an alternate world. Walter tells Peter that there is an alternate world with another version of everything on this world. Walter also lost something precious, and he wanted to cross over to the alternate world to take from there what he lost in this world.

At the FBI offices, Olivia notices a patter of events pointing to Reiden Lake, and she figures out that is where Jones is going to try to open a gateway to an alternate world. Walter is also taking Peter to Reiden Lake. Walter gives Peter a silver dollar and tells him that he collected coins as a child and that was his favorite, but Peter doesn’t remember it.

Olivia Dunham and her fellow FBI agents catch up with Walter and Peter at Reiden Lake. David Robert Jones is also there, and a gun battle breaks out. However, Jones is able to get the gateway open. Jones is heading to the gateway, but Olivia shoots him. However, Jones gets up, because of his past teleportation the bullets pass through him. Jones is halfway through the gateway, when Peter uses his father’s device to close it. Jones is cut in half.

Peter Bishop finds a note from Walter that he has taken a little trip. Walter is once again at the cemetery. He puts a silver dollar on a grave stone and the camera pans down to reveal it is the grave of Peter Bishop, who lived from 1978 to 1985. Guess we now know what Walter went to an alternate world to get.

Nina Sharp tells Olivia that she will keep up her end of the bargain and set up a meeting between her and William Bell. Olivia waits in a restaurant, but no one shows up. Thinking she has been stood up, she gets in an elevator. There is a flash, and Olivia finds that she is somewhere else. She is taken to a room, where she finally meets William Bell. William Bell says it’s difficult to explain where they are, but as the camera pans away, it reveals that they are in an office in one of the World Trade Centers.
