10 Fall Movies For Comic Book Geeks

August 18, 2009 · By Scott Johnson · Posted in Movies

The Summer blockbuster movie season might be coming to an end, but there are still several movies planned for Fall 2009 that we are anxious to see. In fact, there are a couple epic sci-fi movies that you might traditionally expect to see in the Summer that will launch in the Winter months. Here are the 10 Fall movies that we can’t wait to see (no disrespect to the highbrow Oscar flicks that get released near the end of the year, but take into account that we’re Comicbook.com so our list is sci-fi, horror, comic book movie heavy.)

10. Zombieland – You’ve got Woody Harrelson, Zombies, and an amusement park. What’s not to love? Zombieland is set to be released in October, and it looks to have just the right mix of horror and humor to get us in the mood for Halloween. This is the only fun pick on our list, it gets more serious from here on out.

9. Surrogates – Most moviegoers will not realize this is a comic book movie, and they will think of it as an original sci-fi movie. Moviegoers not aware of the comic book story will likely enjoy the film, as usually Bruce Willis in any action adventure spells mainstream success. However, there has already been some online grumbling among comic book fans that the movie might stray from the original comic book series. Regardless of how loyal it stays to the comic book, it’s on our must-see list.

8. 2012 – What do you make of an end of the world film that stars John Cusack instead of Nicholas Cage? We’re actually excited to see someone besides Cage face Armageddon for a change. We love disaster movies, and judging from the trailer, we’re going to get to see plenty of destruction.

7. Shutter Island – This movie had us at Martin Scorsese directing and Leonardo DiCaprio starring. Seeing the trailer has only raised our anticipation level for this film. We now can’t wait to find out exactly what type of experiments are going on at Shutter Island. This one looks to be scary and intense and will make for a great Halloween month movie.

6. Whiteout – Just like with Surrogates, most moviegoers probably won’t even realize this is a comic book movie, but they will just think of it as a great suspense thriller. Based on the trailer, the movie looks to have done justice to the original comic book series. Kate Beckinsale also looks to be a great choice as the lead in the movie.

5. Sherlock Holmes – Ever since Robert Downey, Jr.’s turn as Tony Stark helped make Iron Man a box office blockbuster, we can’t get enough Downey. The guy really has re-launched his career with a passion, and we’re excited to see his take on Sherlock Holmes.

4. The Twilight Saga: New Moon – If someone had to bet on which movie would be a guaranteed hit this Fall, the smart money would be on the Twilight sequel. This movie franchise has an established fan base that will be lining up to ensure a huge opening weekend. This movie would be a hit even if it turned out to be lousy, but judging from the trailers, it looks like the sequel is going to be even better than the first movie.

3. The Road – Like we mentioned before, we love post-apocalyptic type movies, and this one looks like it is going to be a good one. The early reviews from people who have actually seen the movie are extremely good. Besides just gasp-inspiring scenes of destruction, this movie looks to have a great story behind it.

2. Where The Wild Things Are – Talk about an incredible trailer. If you had asked us if anyone could successfully bring Maurice Sendak’s classic childhood story to the big screen, we would have said no, but judging from Spike Jonze’s trailer he has done exactly that. This movie will likely appeal to both children and adults, which means big dollars at the box office.

1. Avatar – This is James Cameron’s first commercial movie since Titanic, which is still the biggest grossing movie of all time. That alone should put this on everyone’s must see list, but the fact that Cameron showed some footage from the movie at Comic-Con, and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive seals the deal. Could this movie actually break new ground in filmmaking and turn out to be even more successful than Titanic? Not sure if any movie could ever sink the Titanic, but Avatar could have a shot. No official trailer for this one yet, but fans in some cities can sign up to see an extended trailer this Friday at the Avatar movie website.
