Nick Fury Movie Rumors: Why It Could Be True

Nick Fury has been in the news this week, as Marvel released some new images spotlighting Fury in The Avengers and rumors emerged of a possible Nick Fury movie. In an interview with IMDB, Neal McDonough, who played Dum Dum Dugan in Captain America: The First Avenger, said that Marvel Studios planned to start shooting Captain America 2 at the end of the year. But the real bombshell was when he added, "Hopefully right after that, we'll jump into Nick Fury because that's the one I'm looking forward to more than anything." The reason that McDonough is excited about a Nick Fury movie is because in the comic books Dum Dum Dugan is Nick Fury's right hand man, so such a movie could mean a lot more screen time for McDonough. Of course, saying that one hopes that Marvel Studios will shoot a Nick Fury movie next isn't exactly confirming that a Nick Fury movie is in the works. While Marvel Studios has two mystery movies on their schedule for 2014, one of those is assumed to be Captain America 2 and most of the speculation about the other mystery movie has revolved around either Dr. Strange or Ant-Man.

However, before we write off McDonough's comments as just wishful thinking, there are some compelling arguments that could be made that a Nick Fury movie is in the works. Remember back in 2009, when it seemed like Samuel L. Jackson was unhappy with Marvel and might not be returning as Nick Fury. Then, Jackson suddenly signed a nine movie deal with Marvel Studios. Wonder what Marvel Studios had to do to get Samuel L. Jackson to come around so quickly? Would Jackson have been satisfied with back-up roles in nine movies? Or did Marvel commit to a Nick Fury movie to get Jackson to sign the deal? Marvel Studios also recently shuffled around their 2014 release schedule. One of Marvel's two mystery movies is now scheduled to be released on April 4, 2014 and the other is scheduled to be released on May 16, 2014. While it might seem odd to schedule two superhero movies so close together, it could make sense if one of them isn't a traditional superhero movie. McDonough also mentioned that he hoped the Nick Fury movie would have a seventies setting, so he could see Samuel L. Jackson with lambchops. If a Nick Fury movie has more of a seventies secret agent theme, then it could help prevent people from getting superhero overload from two Marvel Studios movies released so close together. With the two Marvel movies coming early in the summer of 2014, it would also seem to open up the possibility of another Marvel movie in late summer or fall, which could fit with the Dr. Strange movie or Ant-Man movie rumors.
