Avengers Movie Super Bowl Trailer: Five Big Questions Raised

By: Scott Johnson on February 6, 2012

Earlier this week we raised the question of whether the Avengers Super Bowl movie commercial and/or the Super Bowl would live up to the hype. The resounding answer was they both lived up to the hype and then some. The Super Bowl came down to an unsuccessful Hail Mary pass into the end zone, and the Avengers movie preview offered extended footage online.

However, while we definitely know who won the Super Bowl, the Avengers movie trailer left us with some big questions. Here are our top five big questions from the Avengers movie footage.

Avengers Who Are The Aliens?
Who are the aliens? It’s the big mystery of the Avengers movie. Everyone has a theory. Some say Badoons, others say Frost Giants, still others say Atlanteans, and maybe even Annihilus and his minions. The extended trailer gives us the best look yet of the aliens, and while it’s easy to rule out some alien races from the comics, the images aren’t quite clear enough to make a one hundred percent positive id.

Avengers Aliens Jumping
What are the aliens jumping off of? And speaking of the aliens, what exactly are they jumping off of. Is it some type of giant spaceship? Or are they coming out of an interdimensional portal?  Or is it the tale of the much rumored Leviathan (sea monster)?

Avengers Thor No Helmet

Will Thor ever wear his helmet again? There are a lot of big name stars in The Avengers, so we get that Marvel wants to show their faces. But Captain America is shown wearing his mask and Iron Man is shown wearing his full suit of armor, so why does Thor never seem to be wearing his helmet, even in the midst of battle. Did someone in Marvel’s market research department do a study that determined Chris Hemsworth’s hair was too gorgeous to ever cover up?

Avengers Smaller Hulk

Has the Hulk gotten smaller? If you noticed the Incredible Hulk appears to be a little bit smaller than he was in his previous solo movie. The images above that show Hulk standing in a circle with the Avengers show he is just a little taller than the rest of the group, while in the Incredible Hulk movie he towered over normal-sized people. Previous comments by Marvel Studios head had suggested Hulk could be smaller in The Avengers, but now we know for sure.

Avengers Hawkeye Who?
Who is this guy with the bow and arrow? We don’t recognize this guy from any of the promotional material. He only shows up briefly in a group shot and once solo where he appears to be falling to his death. (We’re kidding of course. We know it’s Hawkeye. Just making a little joke about him getting less screen time than all the other Avengers.)

1&2. There is no telling who the alien race is, there is much speculation that Marvel does not own the rights to many of the main alien races in their own universe, such as the Skrulls, Kree and Annihilus. Further compounding things, the aliens appear to be jumping off a dragon-shaped space ship. Why would beings from a different planet possess a craft in the shape of a mythical human creation? Your guess is as good as mine. Furthermore, Kevin Feige (President of Marvel studios) was allegedly quoted as saying that the origin of the aliens is “not impactful” to the movie.
    3. Does anyone really care if Thor only dons the helmet for ceremonial purposes? I know I don’t (and I have been a huge fan of the character for over two decades) Marvel evidently decided to shoot the vast majority of Thors scenes without the helmet because Hemsworth can be more expressive without it. The helmet has face guards which would otherwise mute much of Chris Hemsworth’s facial expressions. In addition, it is probably not the most comfortable or secure of props.
    4. Does the hulk look a bit smaller? Yes. Should anyone care or be concerned?… Did you see him leap about a mile off the ground and swat an alien ship out of the sky with his bare hands? I rest my case.

    5. HAH !

Doesn’t the Hulk’s size change with his level of anger? I don’t see this to be an issue. I think usually he’s the size we see him at in the Avengers.

If you have to ask about 5 you should be banned from seeing the film!No promotional material?Well apart from being in the THOR film and being on ever avengers film poster since 2011 that is.Also HULK get bigger and stronger as he gets madder.Still don’t know anything about the Enemy’s.Curse you Joss Whedon.

  • Optimus_prime29

Sorry about my Q 5 rant!I din’t read it properly.

Totally agree about the restrictions Thor’s helmet imposes: facial expression, mobility overall, comfort. Part of the relatability of a character is face, movements, reactions, all difficult to discern with the beautiful but unwieldy helmet.

Oh, and, in addition to obscuring Hemsworth’s gorgeous hair, since he’s a huge female draw for this–or any!–movie, let’s not forget the helmet obscures his gorgeous face.

The Hulk doesn’t look much smaller. His shoulders har hunched over and his knees are bent in a fighting position. If he stood straight up, he’d be ALMOST the same Height. You folks need to be more perceptive.

that guy is HawkEye and he had a cameo in Thor to take him down when Thor when he was trying to get his hammer back

I say it may be The Skrulls

  • Mcclainmarquez

No! To hell with that! The Hulk is barely even a “hulk” in this movie…They changed him too much. He looks like the Hulk from the Ang Lee movie now. They should have stuck with Edward Norton’s Hulk. The Hulk in that movie was incredible…No pun intended.

the ‘army’ are probably Frost Giants. Considering a) Loki is Laufy’s son. b) the frost giants got pretty messed up at the end of Thor. c) Loki could easily convince giants everything was Thor’s fault; and d) because the Marvel Cinematic Universe frequently borrows from the Ultimate Universe…

    1. X-Men’s movie outfits,
    2. Samuel L Jackson IS Nick fury in ultimate comics
    3. Spider-man’s organic webshooters,
    4. Loki getting Thor locked up as a mental patient in THOR.
    5. Eddie Brock ‘jr’ being a scrawny mirror image of Parker,
    6. Doctor Doom as a colleague of Fantastic4 getting his powers with them in same event
    7. Cyclops being a pussy and dying.
    8. THOR NEVER WEARING A HELMET

Also here’s another big question answered:
The Cosmic Cube in Thor AND Captain America TFA + the INFINITY GAUNTLET in Thor
    = Thanos in the Avengers.

About the Hulk: he’s not that much smaller. Blonsky (or the actor he played him, Tim Roth) is a short guy, only 5’7″, and Hulk is hunched down a little in that Avengers assembling picture, making him appear a bit shorter than his full height as in the scene with Blonsky.

  • Rsdhillon

There are some errors in your post.

    1) X-Men and Spider-Man movies aren’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, considering neither are owned by Marvel Studios.
    2) Spider-Man has webshooters in the mainstream universe, as well.

They are definitely Skrulls. There was a Avengers movie board game released that has Skrulls as the villians, and even more convincing is this footage from a cancelled Avengers movie based game. Around 1:26, you can clearly see Skrulls, as they look in the comics.

That’s the way I’ve always thought of it. Anyways, a character’s size is usually dependent on what artist is drawing him, so that stuff is pretty relative. The Hulk’s official height is 7ft, but when’s the last time anyone has seen him looking that short in a comic.

  • Tremor_209

answer to the no. 5 question: He is HAWKEYE! Why you people don’t know him? He is the only one who has an arrow and a bow of all entire Avengers member. .
