G.I. Combat #1 Review

Some of DC Comics more unusual war titles have always been among my favorites. I was a huge fan of Weird War Tales, The Unkown Soldier and the original G.I. Combat, so I was excited to see DC Comics bringing G.I. Combat back in their second wave of new DC Universe titles. G.I. Combat #1 captures the magic of what entertained me about some of those war titles from decades ago that I still occasionally revisit when I find them in comic book discount boxes. The first story focuses on The War That Time Forgot, which provides the dual benefit of both war and dinosaurs. The best thing about The War That Time Forgot and all of G.I. Combat #1 is the striking painted artwork by Ariel Olivetti. Olivetti's artwork alone is worth the price of the book, and I would love to see some of his illustrations released as posters. As far as the writing, The War That Time Forgot is the typical introductory story that you might expect. It's really mostly just set-up to give Olivetti some incredible scenery to draw. The second story about the Unknown Soldier offers more in the way of plot. Justin Gary and Jimmy Palmiotti do a great job on crafting a new origin story for The Unkown Soldier. For the artwork in the first story and the writing in the second story, G.I. Combat is definitely worth picking up, and I'm anxious to see what happens next.
