Around two hours ago, Party Down showrunner Rob Thomas launched a Kickstarter campaign to support a feature film adaptation of his cult-hit detective comedy Veronica Mars--and it's already one of the ten highest-funded Kickstarter film campaigns ever. Presently at $385,000 and change, Veronica Mars: The Movie is the fifth-highest-grossing Kickstarter ever done for film and video. The project isn't yet guaranteed to be funded--which is necessary to gain a list on Kickstarter's all-time list--but it seems likely at this point. Since the news broke at 10:35 this morning, the film has generated more than 15% of its $2 million budget--with that first ten percent coming in the first 90 minutes and another $185,000 since. With people just getting to work on the West Coast and Veronica Mars being a top trend on Twitter for much of this morning, it seems likely that amount will double again in the next two hours before it starts to slow down. "Hey, this is the first day there's more me traffic than Matchbox 20 traffic on my Twitter feed!" Joked Thomas, who shares a name with the band's frontman. If funded, the film will go into production this summer for a planned February 2014 release. UPDATE: In the ten minutes since this story went live, the campaign just passed $407,000, making it the third-highest-grossing Kickstarter campaign EVER for film and video. The only two above it? David Fincher's comic book adaptation The Goon and Video Game High School: Season 2.
