With more than two weeks left before the end of its Kickstarter campaign, The Veronica Mars Movie crossed over the $4 million threshold yesterday and has raised more than another $100,000 since. Having raised $3 million the first day or so of fundraising, Veronica Mars was expected to quickly peter out, with many observers thinking that it would top out at roughly $5 million. It looks to be roughly on that pace; even though $120,000 in the last day sounds impressive, an infusion of new revenue has hit over the last couple of days as "rewards"--the goods and services that fans buy via Kickstarter--became available for the first time in a number of non-U.S. territories. The "petering out" has nothing to do with Mars, which has made almost five times what the next-closest film and video Kickstarter was able to raise, but with the fact that established properties have a pattern on Kickstarter that basically says most contributors--who will be fans of the artist or property that's already established--will give either early or, if the project is in danger of not being funded, very late in the campaign. All of the project's higher-end rewards (for contributions of $400 and up) have completely sold out.
