Star Trek Into Darkness Reviews

Star Trek Into Darkness held its world premiere in Sydney, Australia yesterday. With several members of the press in attendance, the first international reviews for Star Trek Into Darkness have landed online. We've rounded up some of the highlights from the early reviews below. IGN has an overall positive review with some criticism. For IGN, the movie was a lot of fun, but it just wasn't very sophisticated. IGN calls out Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Simon Pegg for giving great performances in the movie. Lucy O'Brien writes, "Into Darkness proves that J.J.'s original reboot was no fluke. But let's hope that the next movie can build a bit further upon its simplistic foundations." Graffiti With Punctuation gives Star Trek Into Darkness three out of five stars. For Graffitti With Punctuation, the highlight of the film was the interplay between Kirk and Spock. Benedict Cumberbatch's villain is described as "an inspired piece of casting. However, Blake Howard writes, "This isn't the franchise defining 'middle' picture that this reviewer was hoping it to be. It's not the Empire Strikes Back of an Abrams trilogy; and consequently it didn't quite hit the emotional crescendo of that kind of film." 3 News has a great deal of praise for the film, but they stop short of calling it as good as the first J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. 3 News describes Star Trek Into Darkness as "a riveting action-adventure in space, complete with interpersonal relationships." David Farrier writes, "As dark as it is, it's fun. You could liken JJ's Trek films to the Iron Man films, although again, this is darker territory here – a perfect blend of action, humanity and humour."
