Based on yesterday's box office receipts, it appears as though Man of Steel has replaced Star Trek Into Darkness as the fourth-highest grossing film of 2013. Man of Steel generated over $5 million yesterday, bringing the film's total domestic gross to $219,812,745. That easily passed Star Trek Into Darkness's $217,649,868 and put the film in position to overtake Fast & Furious 6 soon; there's only $10 million separating the films. That movie, though, is still generating revenue at a faster clip than Into Darkness so it might take until Friday to get close. The film is expected to be #2, behind only Iron Man 3 for the year, by the end of this coming weekend at the box office. The current #2, Oz the Great and Powerful, has already wrapped its main theatrical run with a total of $234,556,000. Internationally, Man of Steel has already topped $188 million, bringing the worldwide total for the film to more than $400 million. The film retained the #1 spot in a number of key international markets, including the U.K., last week in spite of stiff competition from World War Z, which significantly overperformed in its opening weekend. The film will open in a number of new markets this week, including Australia and Hong Kong, guaranteeing another strong international weekend, while the domestic offerings are relatively slim this week and experts are widely projecting all three of last week's big performers--Monsters University, World War Z and Man of Steel--to stay in the top five, if not hang onto their top three positions.
