Man of Steel tornado

Before Man Of Steel was released in movie theaters, there were questions raised by the media over whether Warner Bros. should cut the tornado scene being shown in trailers due to the recent real-life tragedies in Oklahoma. However, Warner Bros. elected not to change the scene. Director Zack Snyder said, "If anything, we feel like our Superman has a connection — not to make light of it — to the kind of grief that happens during those kinds of natural disasters. Also, in a sad way, even Superman can't change that." Also, the tornado scene played a pivotal role in the overall plot of the Man Of Steel, and cutting the scene would have had a huge impact on the overall movie. Now, a new controversy has arisen in the media over the Man Of Steel tornado scene. However, instead of suggesting that the scene should have been removed out of sensitivity to tornado victims, the scene is now being criticized for giving bad advice on what to do during a tornado. In the scene, Jonathan Kent directs residents of Smallville to seek shelter under an overpass as a tornado approaches. However, the National Weather Service has pointed out that under an overpass is one of the worst places that you can go during a tornado. According to the National Weather Service, hiding under an overpass during a tornado actually puts someone at great risk of being killed or seriously injured by flying debris. People should actually try to get in a ditch or some other shelter during a tornado. In response to the criticism, Warner Bros. has released a statement stating that Man Of Steel is fiction and not meant to give emergency preparedness advice. Still, more than two weeks after Man Of Steel's release, the scene is generating quite a bit of news coverage in Tornado alley, as local news stations attempt to re-educate the public that hiding under an overpass is not the thing to do.
