Superman Unchained

#1, the anticipated first issue of Scott Snyder and Jim Lee's new, ongoing Superman series, sold more than 250,000 copies and generated $1.25 million in retail sales, estimates ICv2. The books' blockbuster sales combined with a high cover price for the premium dollar share. Interest was already high in the series by two superstars, but couldn't have been hurt by May's Superman promotion for Free Comic Book Day and the release last month of Man of Steel. A handful of variant covers may have had a small effect, but they were announced so late in the game it seems unlikely. The book took the #1 sales slot in June by a wide margin in a month where DC dominated the top ten, with Batman/Superman #1 coming in at #2 and Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman #21 beating out the concluding chapters of Marvel's Age of Ultron event.
