The Hunger Games Catching Fire Box Office

What a difference a day makes. After an impressive start on Thursday night, many were projecting a $170 million to $180 million opening weekend box office for The Hunger Games Catching Fire. The sequel was predicted to almost certainly top the original Hunger Games opening weekend and even have a shot at knocking Iron Man 3 out of the top 2013 opening weekend position. However, early estimates for the Friday box office for The Hunger Games: Catching has the experts backpedaling. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Friday matinee showings for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire are actually pacing behind what the original Hunger Games did in Friday matinee showings. Now, experts are starting to wonder if The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will even top the original Hunger Games opening weekend of $152.2 million. Instead of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire possibly breaking Iron Man 3's opening weekend of $174.1 million, experts are now wondering if the film can break the November opening weekend of $142.8 million held by The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Of course, the trend with Thor: The Dark World was that experts were surprised by a stronger than expected Saturday and Sunday box office. Don't be surprised if the same thing happens with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and forecasts start rising back up before the weekend is over.
