Could we be getting a new Invincible? Or at least a new costume? It seems that way, as Skybound Entertainment are teasing a "1st issue in a bold new direction" on this new, blacked-out poster for the comic. An announcement, apparently, will come at the Image Expo on Thursday as to just what it means. The lead character in that series has been replaced before, but has always come back. Kirkman has always self-identified as a big fan of Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon, which recently replaced its lead character permanently, replacing him with his son. ...which, of course, was the central premise of Invincible at the outset. "All of the characters that appear in Invincible are important," said Kirkman in a 2012 interview with ComicBook.com. "While I didn't have a plan early on to replace Mark Grayson as the lead in the series, I always strove to make all the characters interesting enough that they could carry the series for an issue or two if need be." Of the idea that Invincible can be replaced and the title still carry on, Kirkman said, "I love the idea that Invincible is more about the world he lives in than he himself.  That way myself and the kick ass creative team Ryan [Ottley], Cliff [Rathburn], John [Rauch], Rus [Wooton] and Cory [Walker] get to do cool, random stuff from time to time to shake things up." There's always the possibility, of course, that this is just a quiet swipe at Marvel's never-ending series of new #1s and bold new directions. IT wouldn't be totally out of character for Image Comics titles like Skullcrushers. I wonder if this will affect Carl Grimes's enjoyment of the series at all...!
