With the release earlier today of not one, but three new international posters for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a lot of people seem to have overlooked a pretty obvious homage going on in one of the posters. Which is a shame, really, since that homage might be fairly significant, depending on how clever and literal the filmmakers are looking to be. The image at left, featuring Spider-Man's eye-covering reflecting the scene of his battle with Electro back at the reader, seemed eerily familiar when first we saw it--and then it clicked:

Excepting the different villain, it's pretty much exactly the concept executed on the cover of Marvels #4 by Alex Ross, which you can see at right. Now, here's the thing about Marvels #4: It features a retelling of one of the key, most tragic moments in Spider-Man's character history: the death of Gwen Stacy. The (presumably conscious) recreation of such a famous and iconic image (they even managed to sneak the Green Goblin into the poster, for goodness's sake) could just be an admiration of the concept, composition, etc. that Ross managed to pull off in his original cover. Then again, it could be something more. Remember: We've repeatedly seen Gwen Stacy wearing the same outfit in set photos and even the movie's trailer that she wore in "The Night Gwen Stacy Died," the original Amazing Spider-Man issue that tells the tale Marvels was adapting. Almost everyone has started to assume that Emma Stone's Gwen won't make it out of this movie alive--and so this poster might just be Exhibit H, evidence that reaffirms the existing narrative. Of course, it could just be an image that someone decided was cool; they might not even know about the Ross cover. But that seems unlikely, given how famous Ross's image is and the apparent desire to wring every ounce they can out of the Spider-Man universe; with two spinoffs in the works already and a blog teasing minor characters like Big Man and She-Venom, you can bet somebody is out there doing research, and this image likely came up along the way.
