Ms. Marvel is topping the trending chart on Twitter following today's release of Ms. Marvel #1, with Kamala Khan making her big debut as the new Ms. Marvel. The decision to introduce a Ms. Marvel that was a Muslim, teenage girl has drawn a lot of attention from media outlets. The new series is written by G. Willow Wilson (Cairo), a Muslim herself, with art by Adrian Alphona (Runaways). Though there has been a
small amount of fringe backlash for casting a Muslim girl in such a heroic role – from both conservative Muslims and non-Muslim conservative Americans – the overall reaction has been incredibly positive, lauding Marvel for creating such a unique character in an industry that can often feel quite homogenous. Previously, Ms. Marvel had been Carol Danvers, but she recently took on the mantle of Captain Marvel in her own solo series. In Ms. Marvel #1, Kamala Khan is just an ordinary girl from Jersey City--until she is suddenly empowered with extraordinary gifts. But who truly is the all-new Ms. Marvel? Teenager? Muslim? Inhuman? Find out as she takes the Marvel Universe by storm, and prepare for an epic tale. You can check out a preview of the issue here.
