The nominees in the Best Visual Effects category were Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger, and Star Trek Into Darkness. In Gravity, a medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.
