Warner Bros. has chosen Chris McKay to direct the sequel to their blockbuster animated hit, The LEGO Movie, according to Deadline. McKay was an animation director on The LEGO Movie. The LEGO Movie's directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be producing the sequel. Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern are set to write the sequel, but there are still ongoing discussions about whether the next film should be a direct sequel or something that broadens the franchise's scope by bringing in Lego's Ninjago property. McKay's other work includes directing over 40 episodes of Robot Chicken, plus Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode 3, as well as directing and producing Titan Maximum. The LEGO Movie has been both a critical and financial success for Warner Bros., pulling in almost $361.5 million worldwide so far, leading them to quickly announce a sequel for 2017. In The LEGO Movie, an ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil LEGO tyrant from gluing the universe together. The LEGO Movie is still in theaters.
