The Walking Dead The Grove

Last night's episode of AMC's The Walking Dead brought us quite a bit of closure on some dangling plot threads...and when that happens, you're likely to get some callbacks, references and Easter eggs. In this case, most of them went back to "30 Days Without an Accident," the Season Four premiere, but there were some other things to look out for, as well. Such as... Of Mice and Men We won't spend too much time on this, since we already went over it...but the "look at the flowers" scene at the end of the episode was a beat-for-beat reproduction of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. You can see the scene in question, from the award-winning Gary Sinise/John Malkovich version, below.

"Look at the flowers"

That's the same thing they told Lizzie way back in "30 Days Without an Accident," when Carol had to put Ryan (Lizzie and Mika's father) down after he'd been bitten. The fact that it worked so well for the Of Mice and Men thing is either dumb luck, or a case of the writers thinking way, way ahead. Daryl's fire It seems only common sense to assume (as did Yvette Nicole Brown on Talking Dead) that the fire we see burning in the distance several times throughout this episode is the one Daryl and Beth set at the moonshine house. It may be interesting to see whether an enterprising fan can re-cut the second half of the season once the show has wrapped. The fact that it's unfolding over several weeks for us, and that they've split up the characters into disparate groups, is really deceptive in that it seems likely that it's really only been a few weeks since the start of the season and the outbreak of the flu. Certainly it's been around a week since the fall of the prison, based on clues you can suss out of you're paying attention to the timeline. Cutting scenes together so that the things taking place concurrently are screened more or less that way might make for an interesting exercise and would certainly change the way you "read" the season.

The deer hunters Deer don't seem to be a particularly good omen on the show, especially for kids. It was at the start of the second season when Carl was shot in the chest by Otis, who was aiming for a deer and didn't see Rick and Carl in the woods. This week, the episode is book-ended by them ... perhaps in a nod to Hershel, who was introduced after the events of that episode, who saved Carl and whose presence has been felt in nearly every episode since he died.

tyreese-babeThere's Judith!

I'm really quite surprised by the number of people in the comments thread, on message boards and in the real world who asked where Judith was, and/or thought that the grave with baby shoes (which was already there when Tyreese, Carol and the girls arrived) was for her. Nope! As you can see above, Tyreese has her on his back in the Baby Bjorn, covered in a hood. Presumably the reason for the less baby-looking shape on his back is that they can save money and go for more and better shots if they use the stunt doll in non-action scenes.
