Age of Apocalypse

Speaking to Yahoo, Hugh Jackman, who reprises his role as Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past, revealed what little he knows about the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse. Director Bryan Singer has remained pretty tight-lipped on details about the film so far, but, from how Jackman tells it, a few drinks helps to get Singer in a sharing mood. "Bryan Singer doesn't like to talk about anything," said Jackman (beginning at about the 10:06 mark in the video embedded below), "until after a couple of drinks. So I asked 'What's going to happen?" And out it came." Jackman's son, Oscar, was present for the conversation and seems to have been able to lock in on an important character in X-Men: Apocalypse. "My son came out to dinner," Jackman continued, "and he started talking about X-Men: Apocalypse, which centers on a particular part of history. Well, it doesn't center but it starts there." Apparently Jackman's son is pretty knowledgeable about the particular period of history in question and began pointing out all of the problems in Singer's plans. Jackman continued, "And Bryan turned to me and said, 'I think Oscar Jackman just named the villain of X-Men: Apocalypse.'" This is a very vague story, so it's hard to piece together exactly what any of it means. Was the period of history they were talking about, that Oscar Jackman was so knowledgeable of, a part of the X-Men's fictional history or the real time period the film will be touching on? If the former, the villain may be Mr. Sinister. Sinister is a known ally of Apocalypse, who we know will be the primary villain in the film, and has an extremely long lifespan. It's possible that we'll be introduced to him in an earlier era before seeing him in the modern day. On the other hand, they may have been talking about an actual, historical time period. If this is the case, it is likely ancient Egypt where En Sabah Nur, Apocalypse, was born. If this is the case, perhaps Oscar named a historical figure from that time period, a pharaoh perhaps, who will serve as an antagonist. Perhaps this figure's actions are what put En Sabah Nur on the path to becoming the villainous Apocalypse. There's also a slimmer chance that when Jackman says his son "named' the villain that Singer simply meant there will be a new villain and that Oscar Jackman provided him with an idea for what to name the character. This seems like a pretty big stretch though. X-Men: Apocalypse already has a major antagonist and the X-Men films haven't been shy about altering existing characters to fit their needs, so creating a new characters seems pretty unnecessary. X-Men: Days of Future Past comes to theaters May 23, 2014. X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to follow on May 27, 2016.
