Much has been made of this week's issue of Justice League United -- the #0 issue, which will feature the first on-page appearance of Equinox, the Cree superheroine. That's a First Nations tribe, for the uninitiated -- the native people of Canada for whom teenage activist Shannen Koostach was an outspoken advocate before her untimely death in a car accident in 2010. It's Koostach upon whom Equinox is partially based, with writer Jeff Lemire having said in numerous interviews that he was inspired by the young woman's desire to make the world a better place. (In an interesting coincidence, Equinox shares the cover of Justice League United with, among other characters, Stargirl, who is well-known to have been based loosely on Geoff Johns's younger sister, who passed away in 1996 when TWA Flight 800 exploded in midair. "She's from a small community and has never really been outside of that, let alone seen any of this fantastic superhero stuff going on around her," Lemire told USA Today, who debuted the preview below, of Equinox. "But she's got a good sense of humor and she's become the most relatable character in the book so far."
