After Godzilla set the opening day U.S. box office record for 2014 so far on Friday, everyone was projecting Godzilla to beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier and have the best opening weekend of 2014 so far. However, Godzilla saw a larger than expected dropoff on Saturday, and the opening weekend box office projections have now been revised downward. Godzilla is now estimated to have a $93.2 million opening weekend. Even though the $93.2 million falls short of Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million opening weekend, Warner Bros. & Legendary Pictures still have to be pleased, considering pre-opening forecast had only projected a $70 million opening weekend for Godzilla. The $93.2 million opening weekend easily put Godzilla in first place for the weekend at the U.S. box office. Last weekend's box office champ, Neighbors finished in second place with $25.9 million in its second weekend at the U.S. box office.
