X-Men Days Of Future Past: Why Quicksilver Is Peter Instead Of Pietro

In the X-Men comic books, Quicksilver's real name is Pietro Maximoff. However, in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Quicksilver goes by the name Peter Maximoff. Why the name change? In an Empire Magazine podcast, writer Simon Kinberg was asked the reason behind the name change and why Quicksilver was more sullen in the movie than he is in the comic books. Kinberg answered, "When we meet him [Quicksilver] in the film, he's living in the U.S. suburbs. We thought a real teen kid would go by Peter. It came from a place of asking what the character would really do. Bryan [Singer] is first and foremost a character driven director. For all the visual effects and action of the film, Bryan brings a real sensitivity to character. He asks questions that not all directors do, and he wants to know all the details of these human beings before they come to life on screen. His personality was something we talked a lot about. We liked the idea that he sort of strings sentences together. He doesn't' work in the same rhythms as the rest of the world. And we did make him defiant and a little standoffish to the X-Men when they first arrive at his house." When asked why the X-Men didn't take Quicksilver to Paris with them, Kinberg answered, "I love that people are asking this question, because I think it comes from people loving Evan Peters in the film. It was just a story decision. They go to Peter to help them with one mission to break Erik out of prison. He completes the mission so he's done for this film…"
