Marvel Comics has just pulled off one the most impressive feats in the annals of cinematic history. For the first time ever, three different movies revolving around the creations of a single comic book publishing company hold the top three positions at the worldwide box office for the year to date. As far as we can tell, there’s never even been three of the same genre of film to hold the top three positions at the worldwide box office, much less three films bases on properties from one source. And while there are three different studios behind the films, they do all derive from the single source of Marvel Comics.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the highest grossing film of 2014 so far at the worldwide box office with a total take of $709.3 million. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the second highest grossing film of 2014 at the worldwide box office with a total take of $690 million. X-Men: Days of Future Past is the third highest grossing film of 2014 at the worldwide box office with a total take of $500.2 million.

In addition to holding the three top spots at the worldwide box office, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and X-Men: Days of Future Past also hold the claim of being the only three movies to gross over half a billion so far in 2014. With X-Men: Days of Future Past still going strong at the box office, it’s likely that Marvel Comics will hold onto the top three spots for several weeks.

In fact, the next film to have a real shot at knocking one of the Marvel Comics films out of the top three is likely Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, which isn’t set to be released until June 27. If for some reason Transformers 4: Age of Extinction underperforms, then there’s a chance that Marvel Comics could claim the top four positions when Guardians of the Galaxy is released on August 1, 2014.

While a lot can happen between now and the end of the year, there’s also a really good chance that Marvel Comics will finish 2014 with four movies among the top ten highest grossing movies of the year at the worldwide box office, which also has to be some sort of first.
