Pacific Rim 2

Director Guillermo del Toro has been secretly working on a sequel to Pacific Rim. Or at least it was a secret until he let the cat out of the bag at the ATX Television Festival in Austin.

According to BuzzFeed, del Toro revealed that he and screenwriter Zak Penn have already started work on the Pacific Rim 2 screenplay.

Guillermo Del Toro: I'm working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We've been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox's Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I'm writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.

Even though del Toro has started work on the script, Legendary Pictures has not officially agreed to make the film yet. However, del Toro is hoping to start production after his next project.

"I don't have the money, but I'm proceeding like it is happening," said del Toro.

Guillermo del Toro also revealed a couple spoilers for the sequel. Pacific Rim 2 will include the characters Raleigh Becket, who was played by Charlie Hunnam, and Mako Mori, who was played by Rinko Kikuchi. Even though some have speculated that Pacific Rim 2 might be a prequel, del Toro confirmed that it would be set after the events of the first film. Del Toro also promised crazy ideas and really great spectacle.

While many tried to label Pacific Rim as a failure after a modest opening weekend box office in the U.S., the film proved to have legs, especially internationally. As ComicBook.com previously reported, Pacific Rim actually did quite well at the worldwide box office for a live action film based on new intellectual property.
