Late last night/early this morning, filmmaker Kevin Smith took to Twitter, offering fans an opportunity to learn whether the rumors he created a fake Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice script to throw off potential spoilers were true.

...Soon.

Whether he means today at 11 a.m. PST or tomorrow isn't totally clear; it seems likely he means today, since Smith lives on the West Coast, where the tweet (posted eight hours ago) would actually have been posted on July 7.

Smith also tweeted yesterday, "RIDDLE ME THIS! What's the only day of the week you can always count on? Come back then and I'll tell you a story about a very dark night..." Of course, the answer is Tuesday, because it's "two's day," which would suggest the announcement will be today.

A script has been circulating, starting with some of the larger rumor sites and working its way out to some fans online, purporting to be a legitimate script for Batman V Superman. A number of news stories spun out of this script when it first "leaked," until reporters started to look more critically at it and question its credibility.

Shortly thereafter, a new rumor sprang up, claiming that Smith -- a big supporter of the film, which stars his longtime friend and collaborator Ben Affleck as Batman -- had been contracted by Warner Bros. to write a fake script for the film that could be strategically leaked online, creating a white noise of rumors that would throw audiences off from any potentially-legitimate leaks.

Smith wrote a draft for Superman Returns, the movie loosely based on the Death and Return of Superman storyline which was supposed to be made by director Tim Burton and actor Nicolas Cage. Copies of that script have been circulating online for years, and Smith has authenticated at least one version, in the sense that he happily signed bound copies for fans during a 1999 convention appearance where this reporter was in attendance.
