Groot Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy has just done something that movies very rarely do. Guardians of the Galaxy moved back into the top spot at the U.S. box office this weekend, after finishing the last two weekends in second place.

Guardians of the Galaxy finished this past weekend with an estimated $17.6 million at the U.S. box office. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took second place with an estimated $16.8 million. New release If I Stay took third place with $16.4 million. Fellow new release Sin City: A Dame To Kill For bombed with only a $6.5 million take, leaving the film to a dismal eighth place finish at the U.S. box office.

Guardians of the Galaxy debuted at the top of the U.S. box office on the first weekend of August. However, Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles knocked Guardians of the Galaxy out of the top spot during the film's second weekend at the U.S. box office. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also kept Guardians of the Galaxy out of the top spot during its third weekend at the U.S. box office.

However, now in its fourth weekend of release, Guardians of the Galaxy has reclaimed the top spot. Guardians of the Galaxy's return to the top is a testament to the great word-of-mouth about the film and how many fans are going back to see the film multiple times.

With an estimated $251.88 million to date at the U.S. box office, Guardians of the Galaxy also officially became the highest grossing 2014 summer movie this weekend and moved into third place for all of 2014 at the U.S. box office to date.
