Marvel Issues Apology For Captain America Gaffe Involving Tea Party Movement
Marvel Comics has found itself in the midst of a, pardon the use of the expression, tempest in a teapot. In the latest issue of Captain Amierca, issue 602, current Captain America, Bucky Barnes and The Falcon are attempting to infiltrate a group called “The Watchdogs”, an anti-government militia group that has begun to swell in its numbers as of late. That in itself is not the sole source of controversy. What has caused a stir is the appearance of several protest signs that, unintentionally or not, point to the Tea Party movement that has popped up in parts of America. Cap and Falcon are observing an anti-tax gathering, and several of the signs in the crowd indicate anti-tax and governement sentiment. One sign that stands out ties directly to the Tea Party movement, and that link has caused a minor wave of uproar amongst Tea Parties for this depiction, which puts them on the opposite side of a popular American superhero.
Fantastic Five: First Five Avengers for Relaunch Fully Revealed!
Over the past week, Marvel has been slowly revealing the first five members of its highly-anticipated relaunch of the Avengers series, which will be in the highly capable, talented hands of Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr. Now, the dust has settled, the teasers have been shown, and now we know the first five characters who will make up the new team. So far, it appears to be an interesting mix of the classic team lineup and a bridge to characters of the past few years! As we see here, Thor will be in the lineup! It’s going to be interesting to see how he overcomes the current events of Siege to make his return to the team that he helped to found! The artwork featured gives us a great tease as to what’s to come, and just what sort of stance we can expect from our heroes as we enter a new era and age in Marvel Comics! Let’s see who else will be joining the Asgardian god!
Director Joe Johnston Talks ‘Captain America’
The folks over at Boxoffice.com have a short interview with Joe Johnston, director of ‘Captain America.’ It looks like they are doing an origins story, which is the only way (to us) to re-introduce the character to the masses.
It’s not going to be a Captain America that you expect. It’s something different. It is influenced by the comic book, but it goes off in a completely different direction. It’s the origin story of Captain America. It’s mostly period—there are modern, present-day bookends on it—but it’s basically the story of how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America.
‘The First Avenger: Captain America’ is due in theaters next July.

My Marvel Memories: A Personal Reflection on Marvel’s 70th Birthday
One of the things my late grandfather was always lamenting to me was his treatment of comic books when he was a youngster in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. I started collecting comic books when I was in high school, the mid-1990’s, and my grandfather was always quick to tell me about how they used to be a dime, how he couldn’t believe he got rid of them, and of how they burned so many of them for warmth or used them for various bodily functions and household cleaning.
I know for a fact, based on his observations, that several of those long-lost comics came from Marvel, then known as Timely Comics. The comic book collector/reader/writer I am today cringes when I think of all those lost gems and characters and my grandfather’s memories of them, but I know, on this 70th birthday of Marvel’s, that I will have plenty of my own memories for years to come. Ant-Man Movie Still has Interest, at Least From Edgar Wright!
Edgar Wright has certainly made a name for himself by directing a fair share of films that appeal to certain genres, such as his work on Shaun of the Dead and the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which may help to explain his continued interest in working on a big screen adaptation of one of Marvel Comics’ earliest, and arguably more niche, comic book characters, Ant-Man.
