Comic Book Previews for October 21st, 2009
Another week, another Wednesday, and more comics! James Robinson and Mark Bagley officially begin their take on DC’s premiere super hero team when Justice League of America #38 hits comic book stores this week. It’s the beginning of a new era when a villain from the past returns to wreak havoc on a team that has been hit hard recently by personnel changes and plenty of tragedy! Speaking of the past, Azrael #1 debuts, with the character starring in his own solo series following a two-part story in recent Batman and Detective Comics annuals! Fabian Nicieza will be handling the stories and Ramon Bachs will take care of the artistic duties in this book featuring another of Gotham’s costumed figures! Read more
Comic Book Previews for October 14th, 2009
Well avid readers, we’re freshly back from our trip to the Baltimore Comic-Con this past weekend, and boy are our pens tired! Expect to see some great reports, pictures and interviews over the next week from the show, but first, of course, our comic book previews of hot books coming out this Wednesday!
Marvel brings us some items from the somthing old and something new categories this week, as Web of Spider-Man returns with issue one! Kaine the spider-clone retuns in this issue, as well as a feature with Spider-Girl herself! The something new this week comes with the return of Magneto, which will kick off a new story arc in Uncanny X-Men # 516, as the Nation X story begins! Speaking of mutants, Deadpool hits us with Deadpool #900. Boy, doesn’t the time…fly? Does it matter what issue this is numbered? It’s 104 pages of everything but the kitchen sink humor, action and a live chicken even! Read more
The Harvey Awards 2009! And the Winners Are…
One of the major highlights at this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con was the 2009 Harvey Awards, the comic book industry’s special event that honors excellence in many aspects of the medium. This year’s event ran the gamut of participation, with fans, creators, retailers, press, and industry legends and giants such as Brian Michael Bendis and Neal Adams, who received the HERO Award for his work with the HERO Initiative, present. It was truly a night for the comics industry to come together and celebrate the past year’s accomplishments and highlights. After a mixing and mingling hour and a dinner, the show quickly began, with Scott Kurtz, writer of the award-winning Pvp (Player vs. Player), hosting! Read more

For those who get paid at the end of the month, this Wednesday is your lucky day! Go green and save some gas by running to the back with your check and then head over to your local comic book shop to pick up this week’s latest and greatest new releases! DC this week features an 80-page GIANT special titled Justice League of America, which shows the super team scattered throughout time and battling various foes from across times, locations and forms of combat. Teen Titans reaches a milestone this week with issue #75, and be sure to jump aboard here, as new writer Felicia D. Henderson makes her mark on this DC staple. Also look for Justice Society of America #31, as the traitor in the team’s midst stands revealed! Superman #692 continues a new direction for the title, as the Science Police become more of a force! Before you hit the beach, the mountains or some other locale for the Labor Day holiday, don’t forget to swing by your local comic book shop and pick up this week’s new releases! Image Comics continues to serve up plenty for fans of their runaway hit series Chew. Issue four bows this week, along with reprints of the first three issues! This is your chance to catch up on the adventures of Detective Tony Chu all in one week! Pete Wentz, frontman for the band Fall Out Boy, sees his co-creation debut this week with the first issue of Fall Out Toy Works, the first in a five issue limited series! Dark Horse and Janet Evanovich Concoct a “Racy” Comic!
Another widely popular author is making the move to collaborate with a comic book publisher! Mystery writer Janet Evanovich, best known for her work featuring heroine Stephanie Plum (who debuted in One for the Money) is partnering with Dark Horse Comics for a graphic adaptation of the adventures of her character Alex Barnaby, according to the Los Angeles Times. Star Wars Comics Coming To iPhones
Digital comics just keep growing, and now Dark Horse Comics has announced that Star Wars comics will be released on iTunes. Dark Horse is releasing the comics in partnership with Lucasfilm and THQ Wireless. It will mark the first time ever that Star Wars comics have been available on the iPhone mobile platform.
The first three collections to be released are Star Wars: The Clone Wars Vol. 1 – Shipyards of Doom, Star Wars: Empire Vol. 1 – Betrayal and Star Wars: Legacy Vol. 1 – Broken. These collections cover the time period between the Clone Wars era, the Classic era and the distant future.
Dark Horse Announces New Wave of Domo Collectibles
Dark Horse has just made some new announcements about its Domo collectibles. Dark Horse recently launched a blind-box Qee program, which was created in conjunction with Toy2R and features the likeness of Japanese NHK television’s mascot, Domo.
The Target retail chain will be conducting a new vinyl toy test with the blind-box Qee. The test will target the mass-market audience using new packaging solutions and colorways. These special Qees have been produced in four new, exclusive colors that were previously unavailable. Domos in the new colors are now available in a special blind-box two-pack. The new colors will include solid yellow, solid orange, translucent black and translucent blue.
Deadlocke To Be Comic Book And Movie Based On Venomous
Dark Horse has announced that they will be partnering with 72 Productions to produce a Deadlocke comic book. Deadlocke will be a one-shot comic tied into Christopher Krovatin’s Venomous, which is a Simon & Schuster young adult novel.
72 Productions also has a Deadlocke feature film in the works. 72 Productions is run by Jen Chaiken and Sebastian Dungan
Deadlocke is a mixture of real life and young adult themes and escapist comic book fantasy. The comic book will tell the story of Locke Vinetti, who is a Manhattan teenager. Locke’s world is turned upside down when the dark alter ego who exists in his drawings threatens to take over his life.
Locke struggles to control his newfound strength and fights to keep from losing Renee, who is the darkly beautiful girl of his dreams. Eventually, Locke winds up in a brutal rooftop battle where the characters’ lives, and souls, hang in the balance.
