FlashForward Clues And Questions

The premiere of FlashForward opened with a disaster scene filled with overturned cars, smoking buildings, and at least one person in flames. What led to all this destruction? The basic premise of FlashForward is that everyone on the planet blacks out for exactly two minutes and seventeen seconds.
