G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Review: Simply Awful

I tried.  I really did.  Realizing that when a studio typically shuns pre-release reviews, the film will most likely be terrible, I checked my head at the door.  After all, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra IS a summer movie.  So I grabbed my drink, my popcorn, and watched some good previews.  And then it got worse. Read more

When it comes to ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA’, we’re not sure what to think.  The studio won’t let mainstream critics review the film, which is almost always a very bad sign.  Yet there are a few folks that have been able to screen it, and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.  Now comes Director Stephen Sommers taking the type to an all new level: Read more

G.I. Joe Is A No Show For Critics

August 4, 2009 · Posted in G.I. Joe: The Rise of the COBRA · Comment

Paramount has got movie critics at major newspapers and magazines across the nation all in a tizzy by refusing to give them an advanced screening of G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra. It happens to be one of those movies that critics are anticipating as being so dreadfully awful that they are anxious to stake their claim at being the first to coin various bad movie headlines based on the title of the movie.

Critics can’t wait to utilize such headlines as “G.I. No!” and “G.I. Don’t Go!” Recent ads have had some already labeling G.I. Joe as the worst movie of all time. However, the few early reviews that have leaked out mainly from Internet sites have been surprisingly positive. Could it be that G.I. Joe is actually a good movie? Or has the bar been set so low that moviegoers can’t help but find the movie exceeding their expectations?

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura talks G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA

July 31, 2009 · Posted in G.I. Joe: The Rise of the COBRA · Comment

With ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA opening next week, more and more information on the film is leaking out.

Superherohype has an interview with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.  Some highlights:

On whether or not the film will rely on CGI:

“Not for the stunts, no.  The CGI is really for the underwater environment and we have a giant chase scene where we go all through Paris and do some crazy stuff.  The only way you can do that is with CGI.”

On the possibility of a sequel:

“Well what people don’t understand and it’s always interesting to talk to the non-initiate of ‘Transformers’ or ‘G.I. Joe.’  Hasbro developed real deep mythology to both of those properties so it’s the kind of property that naturally lends itself to multiple interpretations.  There are so many different characters.   Some people on the Web were like, “Why wasn’t Flint in this movie?”  Well Duke or Flint.  Some people like Duke, some people like Flint.  Some people like Lady Jaye, some people love Scarlett.  There’s an opportunity to do more than one film if you’re lucky enough to get the first one right.”

Jeremy Dale: Bringing Familiar and New Faces to Life

Being a part of a successful and well-known franchise, like one such as G. I. Joe, can certainly make a lot of people sit up and take notice, and with artist Jeremy Dale, he’s certainly an artist to look for as he increases his profile and projects, those of his own creation, such as his self-created Skyward series, and his work on the Harvey Award winning Popgun vol. 1.  The break into big name projects such as G.I. Joe and Popgun came with his work on Wildguard: Fools Gold #1 by Todd Nauck, who was looking for someone available and who, Dale said, could do pages, “lightening fast,” and from there forward Dale has kept himself busy with multiple projects, but he does have a soft spot for his work on G.I. Joe. Read more
