Comic Book New Releases for July 1st, 2009

Before you rush off to that Fourth of July barbecue or picnic, be sure to swing by your local comic book shop this Wednesday and pick up these explosive issues from all your favorite publishers, guaranteed to cause plenty of fireworks on their own!

It’s finally here!  For Marvel, the biggest release this week is certainly Captain America: Reborn #1.  The book, with multiple variant covers, is set to be a bestseller, and Marvel has been relatively quiet on what impact this return will have on a Marvel universe currently dealing with the events of Dark Reign.  On the lighter side, Deadpool: Merc With a Mouth debuts, with our anti-hero on a quest to retrieve his own head.  Read the book to find out what that means!  We can’t ruin all the fun!  Not letting the boys have all the fun, Marvel Divas #1 drops into stores, focusing on four of Marvel’s lesser-used female characters.  Also, don’t miss the second chapter in the Dark Avengers/X-Men arc Utopia; get Uncanny XMen #513 Wednesday! One thing becomes readily apparent upon meeting Boom! Studios CEO and co-owner Ross Richie: the man knows, and LOVES, comic books.  As soon as we sit down for this interview, Richie eagerly digs through a stack of back issues in front of me, gushing over the names of artists and writers from years past such as Buscema, Kirby and Byrne.  He knows them by cover and title only, able to spin comic book history quickly from his mind.

His enthusiasm and skill in comic books has served him well as Boom! Studios CEO, helping to guide the company into being one of the most dynamic and risk-taking around.  He credits a lot of that success to the people he has brought into the company and the material that Boom! deals with. Will Dark Knight Win Big At 81st Annual Academy Awards?

February 22, 2009 · Posted in Batman, Hellboy, Iron Man, The Dark Knight · 2 Comments

While the Academy failed to nominate The Dark Knight in either the Best Picture or the Best Director categories, the film managed to make its way into numerous other categories.  The big question is how the film will do in all these other categories.  If The Dark Knight somehow manages to win in most of the eight categories where the film is nominated, then the Academy’s huge oversight in not recognizing the film in the Best Picture of Best Director categories will become all the more glaring.

The Dark Knight was recognized with nominations in categories for performance by an actor in a supporting role, art direction, cinematography, film editing, makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, and visual effects.

The Dark Knight category that will garner the most interest from viewers is the Best Supporting Actor category.  Heath Ledger was nominated posthumously for his performance as the The Joker.  Other actors nominated in the category were Josh Brolin, Robert Downey Jr., Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Michael Shannon.
