Thanks for the Comic Book Memories: Memorable Deaths of the 2000’s
2009 saw some of the most memorable deaths in the entertainment and political realms in recent memory. Icons, legends and established figures were taken from the world, some on the verge of a comeback and some in their prime. Comics have also lost some icons, not only this year but in the past decade. Death in the real world is a vastly different thing from that of the fictional world, with the prospect of return always a possibility where comics are concerned. With that in mind we look back at some of the more memorable losses in comics over the first decade of the new millennium. While not everyone who died is on this list, it hopefully covers those comic book deaths that were surprises, twists or the loss of those who were near and dear to the hearts and minds of readers everywhere for one reason or another. Spawn And Cerebus Story Finally Gets Reprinted
Most of the early Spawn stories have been reprinted, but Spawn #10 has never been reprinted, that is until now. After over fifteen years, one of the most unusual crossover comic books ever is finally returning to print.
Spawn #10 featuring a crossover between Todd McFarlane’s Spawn and Dave Sim’s Cerebus will be reprinted in the upcoming Spawn Origins Collection: Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 Hardcover.
“It hasn’t been reprinted since it first came out,” Spawn #10 writer and Cerebus creator Dave Sim said. “I’m very glad that’s all over with after 14 years. Todd sent me black and white scans of Spawn 10 which will be published in a Cerebus Miscellany volume someday and, hopefully, Spawn 10 will be included in any and all future collections if the Toddmiester decides to make that official McFarlane policy.”
Image Comics Announces The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade Volume Two
The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade Volume Two is the second part of a sci-fi epic written by Claudio Sanchez’s and drawn by Gabriel Guzman. The cover to the trade paperback is by Tony Moore. The Amory Wars: Second Stage Turbine Blade Volume Two also includes an all new exclusive mini-story entitled “33.”
“The Amory Wars is a science fiction story based on a family’s quest to understand where it fits into the universe of Heaven’s Fence,” said Claudio Sanchez. “The second volume dives deeper into what the reader found out in the first volume–Coheed and Cambria were created for something bigger than your average mom and dad living in the suburbs. What really sets the story in motion is when they find out that this ‘larger purpose’ in the scheme of the universe isn’t for the bettering of mankind, but to actually destroy it.”
50-Girls-50 Winning Artist Revealed by Image Comics
After a nationwide search, lots of pouring over submissions and narrowing it down to ten finalists, Image Comics and Frank Cho are proud to announce the winner of the 50-Girls-50 artist contest. Cho, one of the most famous writer/artists in comics, and writer Doug Murray announced that Axel Medellin is the winner of the contest! At last month’s Baltimore Comic-Con, Cho unveiled the top ten finalists of the nationwide search for the artist for this mini-series, a sort of all-female version of Star Trek.
“Judging was very difficult. We had to grade the entries on multiple counts: the fidelity to the model sheets produced by Frank, the story-telling displayed, the quality of the layouts—all of these factors came into play. We managed to pick the final four artists, but choosing a winner out of the four was extremely difficult since each artists had what we were looking for in terms of quality and clear storytelling skills,” said Murray. ‘Cowboy Ninja Viking’ Not Unbalanced in Title Alone
Image Comics has certainly released a comic book series that is setting itself apart in many ways, the most obvious of which is the oversized form the book Cowboy Ninja Viking comes in. The title, which refers to the three different personalities sharing space inside protagonist Duncan’s psyche, also is quite attention-getting, as three distinct warriors are joined together. The concept for the book, a group of patients living with Multiple Personality Disorder who were part of an experiment to create a counter-intelligence group using the abilities their personalities had are one the loose, is a unique one, and the art is quite different for a typical comic book, but overall the book seems to be struggling with balancing all that’s going on inside as well as Duncan in this premiere issue.
