In what some people would call a case of adding insult to injury, Warner Bros. has announced a director’s cut release of the adapted comic book series Watchmen, just in time for the industry’s big event in San Diego, Comic Con.  With an additional 25 minutes added on, the rerelease promises extra scenes and the death of a supporting character.   Read more

Box Office Woes Continue For Watchmen

March 23, 2009 · Posted in Movies, The Watchmen, The Watchmen Movie, Watchmen Movie · 2 Comments

Zack Snyder’s Watchmen movie took another huge nosedive this past weekend falling to 5th place. After cashing in with a whopping $55.7 million in opening weekend ticket sales two weeks ago, Watchmen brought in only $6.7 million in its third weekend at the box office.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Box office expert Paul Dergarabedian believes Watchmen’s box office woes are due to the film’s R-rating and unfair comparisons to more traditional comic book franchises such as Batman or Spider-man. Dergarabedian, who is president of Media By Numbers, a company that provides analysis and commentary based on box office sales and data, also believes that viewers aren’t flocking to Watchmen because all of the superheroes in the film are unfamiliar to the general public. He went on to say that “this is not a populist comic book movie.”

Watchmen Movie Review: Hating The Watchmen

March 18, 2009 · Posted in Movies, The Watchmen, The Watchmen Movie, Watchmen Movie · 5 Comments

If you caught the beginning of my belated Watchmen movie review, yesterday, I outlined what I loved about the Watchmen film adaptation.  Today, I will detail what I hated about it.  Hang on to your hats…

Malin Akerman’s Acting - Wow, just wow.  It’s a good thing she looked hot in that latex costume, because that’s the only positive thing I’m taking from her performance.  Her “You’re such an asshole!” line prior to shooting at Veidt should go in the Overacting Hall of Fame.  And what about the crying scene on Mars?  Dr. Manhattan tells us FIVE MINUTES PRIOR that Laurie is going to be crying.  We get to the finish of the scene and guess what?  NO TEARS!  She does a horrific sniffling job, but that’s it.  The worst part about the scene?  They shoot it from underneath!  So we’re looking at Laurie from the ground up, WHERE WE’RE SUPPOSED TO SEE HER CRYING.  Next time, yell CUT! and bring in the intern with a freaking saline bottle.  Sheesh.

Watchmen Movie Review: Loving The Watchmen

March 17, 2009 · Posted in Movies, The Watchmen, The Watchmen Movie, Watchmen Movie · 2 Comments

While one of my fellow Comicbook.com writers weighed in with his Watchmen movie review on opening weekend, I was one of those rare souls who didn’t rush to see the movie immediately.  Ok, I had a travel conflict, but I finally got the chance to see the Watchmen movie over its second weekend of release.  My reaction: when it was good, it was REALLY good.  When it was bad, boy did it stink.  I’ll break my thoughts into two columns.  Today, the good:

Jeffrey Dean Morgan/The Comedian - Time will tell on his performance, but if I had to rate it today, I’d say that Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Comedian performance is one for the ages.  Right now, it’s in the top five of all time comic book role adaptations.  Some of you may think I’m crazy, but I’d put it right up there with Heath Ledger.  Why?  Because, like Ledger, Morgan got into the heart and mind of the character.  Hell, as I was watching it, I could have sworn that Morgan must have channeled Alan Moore, because that character was the EXACT one from the page.  Amazing.  The range of emotions was there. You felt the Comedian’s violence, his lack of tolerance, his sadness.  The Comedian is the microcosm of Watchmen, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan brought every bit of that world to the screen.

Is Watchmen A Box Office Flop?

March 13, 2009 · Posted in Movies, The Watchmen, The Watchmen Movie, Watchmen Movie · Comment

Remember when people wondered if the general movie-going public would believe a man could fly? Remember when there was a question about whether a Batman movie would be successful without the camp and without Robin? Remember when it took eight years for Hollywood to make another Batman movie after attempting to add Robin? Remember when it was a longshot that a second tier character like Iron Man could translate into big box office dollars?

How far the comic book movie world has come that now an “R” rated comic book movie with no big name actors can open in March with the biggest opening of the year to date and be considered a flop by some. Just think about it, a couple of years ago, no one would have considered pouring huge money into making a comic book movie without a single big name actor. And while the Watchmen might be one of the best known superhero comic books among comic book fans, it is one of the least known superhero comic books among the general public to ever make it to the big screen.

DC Lauches After Watchmen Compendium

In 1977, studio executives for the film Saturday Night Fever discovered that fans of the film were leaving theatres and rushing to the nearest record store. At the store, fans were buying the film’s soundtrack and disco records by the armload. Now that the Watchmen movie has conquered theatres, DC Comics is banking on that same principle with the launch of the web page After Watchmen, What’s Next?

Watchmen Opening Box Office Fails To Beat Jesus Or The Spartans

March 8, 2009 · Posted in Movies, The Watchmen, The Watchmen Movie, Watchmen Movie · 4 Comments

While the Watchmen movie could hardly be classified as a bomb or a flop, the projected opening weekend box office is coming in on the light side of estimates. No one expected the Watchmen movie to put up the type of opening weekend numbers that The Dark Knight did this past Summer, but it was expected to give Zack Snyder’s 300 movie a run for its money.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Watchmen movie box office opening weekend is projected to come in at $55.7 million. While this number might pale into comparison to some comic book movies released this past summer, it is a very respectable number for a movie with an “R” rating released in March. On the positive side, the Watchmen movie had the biggest opening weekend of any movie so far in 2009. The movie also trounced the competition, taking in close to seven times the amount of the number two film for the weekend.

Watchmen Movie Review: Six New Stars Emerge

March 7, 2009 · Posted in The Watchmen, The Watchmen Movie, Watchmen Movie · 3 Comments

Even though the Watchmen movie consists of a cast of lesser known actors and actresses attempting to play some very complex roles, there are amazingly no poor acting performances in the Watchmen. Every single major cast member does an amicable and believable job playing the various characters of the Watchmen.

It is likely that the Watchmen movie will help to ignite the careers of several of the stars of the movie. While all the cast members are good, which actors or actresses cross over into greatness? After watching the Watchmen, there were multiple performances that stood out.

If there is a weak spot in the acting in the Watchmen movie, then many are pointing to Matthew Goode’s portrayal of Ozymandias. In some of the early scenes Goode does come across as a little awkward as Ozymandias, but I think that is an intentional part of the character development. Goode is attempting to set Ozymandias up as the wide-eyed optimist, which helps to make what Ozymandias eventually does all the more shocking.

The Watchmen Is The Feel-Good Movie Of The Year

March 7, 2009 · Posted in Movies, The Watchmen, The Watchmen Movie, Watchmen Movie · 3 Comments

Many things have been and will be written about the Watchmen movie. Some people are calling it a flop, while others are praising it as a masterpiece. The one thing for certain is that no one will describe it the way that we jokingly just did in the headline for this article. While hardly the feel-good movie of the year, the Watchmen movie is a graphically violent, intense, often disturbing, but yet brilliant piece of cinema.

Whereas The Dark Knight took people to the edge of what can be shown in a comic book movie and still be deemed socially acceptable by the mainstream public, the Watchmen movie jumps right over the edge. As scenes of superhero rape, mutilation, and mass murder play out, people who prefer their superheroes to be Tobey Maguirish are obviously going to be immediately turned off by the movie.
