President Barack Obama Punches Osama Bin Laden And Carries Gun In Comic Books

March 12, 2009 · Posted in Image Comics, Savage Dragon, Youngblood · 9 Comments

The first couple of times that Barack Obama popped up in comic books he was fairly conservative. He received an endorsement from the Savage Dragon during the election, and he hung out with everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man at his inauguration. Now, that Barack Obama is actually President and occupying the White House his comic book appearances have gotten a little more risqué.

No longer is comic book Barack Obama content to sit on the sidelines and let the superheroes take care of business. No, comic book Barack Obama wants a piece of the action himself.

On a WonderCon comic book convention variant cover for Savage Dragon #145, President Barack Obama is shown socking it to Osama Bin Laden. The cover is a retro-cover calling back to the days when comic book characters like Captain America would punch Hitler.

President Barack Obama Announces Youngblood Superhero Team

February 24, 2009 · Posted in Image Comics, Youngblood · Comment

Tonight, the real-life President Barack Obama will give his first State of the Union address. Tomorrow, the comic book version of President Barack Obama will reveal the new lineup for the Youngblood superhero team in Youngblood #8.

In addition to the big reveal of the Youngblood team members by comic book President Barack Obama, Youngblood #8 also marks the return of real-life series creator Rob Liefeld. When Image Comics launched Youngblood back in early 1992, it was the first creator-owned comic book from Image Comics to sell over a million copies right out of the gate. Famed director Brett Ratner also recently announced that he had picked up the rights to produce a Youngblood movie.

Brett Ratner Signs On To Youngblood Movie

February 9, 2009 · Posted in Image Comics, Movies, Youngblood, Youngblood Movie · Comment

Controversial director and producer Brett Ratner has signed on to produce the forthcoming Youngblood movie. According to Variety’s website, the announcement came over the weekend at the Berlin Film Fest. Ratner’s production company, Rat Entertainment, will be producing the film in a joint development deal with Red Om Films, which is owned by actress Julia Roberts.

Youngblood is one of the few comicbooks left with tentpole potential,” Ratner told Daily Variety. “It was a real personal passion project for me.” Hopefully, that means staying true to the comics series.

Making movies based on comics is not a new medium for Ratner, who directed 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. The Last Stand angered many X-Men fans, killing off popular characters such as Cyclops and Professor X and having the Dark Phoenix plotline not stay true to the comic. The third installment’s box office gross reflected what many considered to be the worst of the X-Men films.

Can Barack Obama Save Comic Books?

January 19, 2009 · Posted in Image Comics, Marvel Comics, Savage Dragon, Spider-Man, Youngblood · 9 Comments

While comic books haven’t seen the huge declines that many industries have seen, every industry appears to be hurting in these economic times. With so many people out of work, any product that is not absolutely necessary for survival is going to fill a pinch. Reports of comic book store closures and the recent cancellation and postponement of a couple of major comic book conventions by Wizard Entertainment suggests the comic book industry is not immune.

Since Barack Obama is reportedly a comic book collector, can comic book fans count on him to bail out the comic book industry if any of the major publishers get into financial trouble?  While it’s doubtful that President Obama will be cutting a billion dollar bailout check to the comic book industry, he apparently doesn’t need to pony up any federal money to give the industry a jolt.

YoungBlood Collected In Trade Paperback

July 3, 2008 · Posted in Youngblood · Comment

Youngblood Focus TestedThe first four issues of the all-new, all-different Youngblood comic series are being collected into a trade paperback called “Focus Tested.”  The new Youngblood features the creative team of Godland’s Joe Casey and Conner Hawke’s Derec Donovan.

“’Focus Tested’ is the opening salvo of the new Youngblood assault that Derec and I have planned,” Joe Casey said. “The stories in this collection are just the beginning of a much larger epic that, for fans of the Youngblood concept, should give them exactly what they’ve been wanting for years.  It’s pop superheroics on a grand scale, not to mention media and celebrity worship at its most obnoxious.  All this, plus the grand soap opera and the big explosions that superhero team books do so well. This one’s got it all!”
