Barack the Barbarian #1 is a Hilarious Adventure!
In addition to solving our economic crisis, negotiating peace and understanding around the world and trying to improve our image overseas, President Barack Obama, or his beefed up likeness at least, is adding another duty to his agenda, thanks to Devil’s Due Publishing, who has him starring in the Larry Hama written Barack the Barbarian, a mini-series debuting this week. The storytelling possibilities are wide-open with a title such as this. So how do Hama and company fare with Barack’s first outing as a loincloth wearing adventurer? Surprisingly well!
Ripped From the Headlines! More Possibilities for Real Life Comic Books!
Have comic books gotten out of hand? Are there just too many comic books out there now that are based on real people? If the recent appearance of comics based on the lives of Barack Obama, John McCain, and Sarah Palin were just the beginning, then can fictional books such as the recent addition Barack the Barbarian be a sign of future endeavors? If that’s the case, then are any real celebrities or politicians safe? Out of the recent group of headline makers, only a few have shots at having their lives exaggerated, only slightly of course, in four-color fabulousness!
With that said, here are our picks for celebrities who could make for interesting reading, using powers based on some of their best (worst?) attributes, in the style of Barack the Barbarian. Read more
Obama’s Newest Foray into Comics: Barack the Barbarian
President Obama has seen a lot of action in the realm of comic books lately. From being endorsed by Savage Dragon, to being saved from the Chameleon by Spider-Man, to activating a new unit of the Youngblood team, the 44th President of the United States has been a very busy man. Now, President Obama will appear in yet another pair of comic books.
Obama first will be featured in a new series titled Barack the Barbarian: Quest For the Treasure of the Stimuli. A cross between the 2008 election and Conan the Barbarian, this series, published by Chicago based Devil’s Due Publishing, features the title character as he protects the villagers of Hope Kingdom. Barack the Barbarian is aided in his quest by the sorceress Hilaria and her Loki-like husband Biil. Barack searches for the elusive treasures while fighting a slew of foes based on many heroes of the Republican Party, including the overlord Booosh, Chain-knee, and a bikini-clad ice vixen that looks an awful lot like a certain governor from Alaska.
No Shortage Of Barack Obama In Savage Dragon Comic Book
Image Comics appears to be poking a little fun at Marvel Comics for how many editions they’ve printed of Amazing Spider-Man #583 featuring President Barack Obama on the cover. Just for the record, there have been five printings in case anyone is still counting. In a press release, Image Comics wanted to make sure fans were aware that there will be plenty of prints of Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon #145 which will also feature President Barack Obama on the cover.
Image Comics deserves credit (or maybe blame) for kicking off the Barack Obama cover mania. Before Barack Obama even won the election, Savage Dragon endorsed the then Presidential candidate on the cover of Savage Dragon #137 (which has gone to a fourth and final printing if anyone is still counting).
In addition to featuring President Barack Obama, Savage Dragon #145 is also being marketed as a jumping on point for new fans. The issue will feature Savage Dragon’s return to the Chicago police force.
Marvel Comics Celebrates President’s Day With Abraham Lincoln And Barack Obama
Presidents have been very, very good to Marvel Comics lately. President Barack Obama’s appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #583 has led to five printings of the issue. So it should come as no surprise that Marvel Comics is celebrating President’s Day with another Presidential appearance.
However, this time the focus isn’t current President Barack Obama, but rather past President Abraham Lincoln. In honor of President Lincoln’s 200th birthday, Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited is releasing an exclusive free digital comic featuring Spider-Man and Captain America at the historic Gettysburg Address. The free digital comic is called Gettysburg Distress and is six pages in length. The comic was written by Matt Fraction with art by Andy MacDonald. It will become available online starting on President’s Day, Monday, February 16, 2009.
Barack Obama And Abraham Lincoln On Spider-Man Cover
Marvel Comics has announced that they will be doing a record fifth printing of Amazing Spider-Man #583. Marvel Comics has already sold out of four previous printings of the comic book, which features Spider-Man at Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration.
In Amazing Spider-Man #583, Spider-Man helps to reveal a super-villain named the Chameleon that is attempting to impersonate President Barack Obama. The cover of the first four printings of the comic featured Spider-Man and Barack Obama against various backdrops.
The first edition featured a light blue background, the second edition featured a light yellow background, the third edition featured an American flag against a light blue background, and the fourth edition featured an American flag against a white background.
Savage Dragon Endorses President Barack Obama One Last Time
After three sold out printings of Savage Dragon #137, it was beginning to look like Savage Dragon might wind up endorsing Barack Obama for President throughout his entire first term in office. However, Image Comics and Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen have announced that the fourth printing of the landmark Barack Obama endorsement issue of Savage Dragon will be the final printing.
“While we sold out some time ago, we’ve been receiving an awful lot of letters from fans and retailers alike demanding another printing,” Erik Larsen said. “This fourth - and definitely final, I might add - printing commemorates the very first time a superhero has openly nominated a real-life candidate for Presidential office. It’s been flattering to receive such attention and I hope everyone who’s bought a copy sticks around for the rest of the series, especially #145’s relaunch!”
Spider-Man And Barack Obama Comic Book Goes To Fourth Printing
While Barack Obama might be warning America that the economy could get worse before it gets better, there is one place where the new President is having instant success. As far as comic book sales go, President Barack Obama has the touch of gold.
President Barack Obama’s appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #583 has become the hottest comic book since Superman died. The initial release resulted in long lines at comic book stores and was an instant sell-out. Marvel Comics immediately announced a second printing, which hit comic book stores on Wednesday, January 21. The second printing also proved to be an instant sell-out.
A third printing of Amazing Spider-Man #583 is schedule to arrive in comic book stores on Wednesday, January 28. The third printing has already sold-out at the distribution level, so Marvel has announced that they will be doing a fourth printing.
Can Barack Obama Save Comic Books?
While comic books haven’t seen the huge declines that many industries have seen, every industry appears to be hurting in these economic times. With so many people out of work, any product that is not absolutely necessary for survival is going to fill a pinch. Reports of comic book store closures and the recent cancellation and postponement of a couple of major comic book conventions by Wizard Entertainment suggests the comic book industry is not immune.
Since Barack Obama is reportedly a comic book collector, can comic book fans count on him to bail out the comic book industry if any of the major publishers get into financial trouble? While it’s doubtful that President Obama will be cutting a billion dollar bailout check to the comic book industry, he apparently doesn’t need to pony up any federal money to give the industry a jolt.
