Can’t get enough undead fun?  Wish YOU could play the part of a zombie villain hell-bent on vengeance and a tasty human heart?  You’re in luck!  WizKids has announced the May 2010 release of a new entry into the HeroClix universe when the DC HeroClix Blackest Night Starter game lands in your comic book and gaming stores this spring!  Even if you’ve never picked up a HeroClix game before, this game provides a great entry point, and a really cool starter pack, to initiate you into the game of strategy and battle between some of your favorite fictional characters. Where does the time go?  It’s already time for a look at what will be hitting store shelves this week from the producers of your favorite four-color adventures!  DC Comics unleashes Blackest Night #3, the next chapter in the saga of Earth’s heroes against the super-powered dead!  Can the Green Lanterns and the Justice League begin to figure out what’s causing long-departed friends, family and villains to rise and attack?  The newest Batgirl spreads her wings in Batgirl #2 and a showdown in Fawcett City takes place in JSA vs. Kobra #4!  Action Comics #881 picks up immediately with the aftermath of Codename: Patriot, and Supergirl finds herself under added pressure.  Famed writer J. Michael Straczynski takes helm with issue 27 of The Brave and the Bold, as Batman teams with, wait for it, Dial H for Hero!!  Also be sure to check out Batman and Robin #4 and Streets of Gotham #4! Now that you’ve taken the Labor Day holiday to rest up and catch up on all those comics you keep meaning to get to during the regular work week, it’s time to get a fresh stack!  There’s plenty to pick up in stores this Thursday, and the adventure and spandex-covered heroes are happy to oblige!

 From Marvel this week, more pieces of Norman Osborn’s master plan for the world come into focus, as Dark Reign: The List begins with an Avengers one-shot.  Norman’s not happy with the way things are, and this new arc proves it!  Be sure to read Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Exodus #1 before reading The List!  Read more

Comic Book Previews for August 26th, 2009

The kids back in school this week aren’t the only ones starting a new term and a new direction, as this Wednesday gives us the highly anticipated debut of the Jonathan Hickman and Dale Eaglesham creative team behind The Fantastic Four with issue 570.  A new story arc also begins in Secret Warriors #7, as the Dark Avengers, Thunderbolts and Nick Fury’s Secret Warriors find themselves on a collision course, with Ares’ son the prize!  New Avengers #56 promises some shocking action, as the events of the previous issue unfold with several heroes having their power drained.  The Incredible Hulk #601 sees the return of the recurring title with a new world for Bruce Banner and company.  Dark X-Men: The Beginning wraps up with issue three, bringing to a close the origin of this deceptive, Emma Frost-led team. Comic Book Previews for August 12, 2009

What could be causing part of the oppressive heat this summer, at least this Wednesday anyway?  Those SEVENTY candles on the top of Marvel’s cake, that’s what!  Happy birthday to the home of some of the most recognizable characters in pop culture today!  With that, Marvel has a big birthday bash planned, with several powerful new releases this week!

First up for the birthday boys and girls is Marvel Comics #1: 70th Anniversary Edition.  It starts here!  The original Human Torch, Ka-Zar, and Sub-Mariner are all here, brought to you in a stunning new edition by some amazing talent in the industry today!  That’s not all birthday fun!  The Marvel’s Project #1 debuts, with this Ed Brubaker penned tale kicking off the ultimate origin story of the Marvel universe!  Look also for the releases of Ultimate Comics Avengers #1 and Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1.  Both of these titles will give us a post-Ultimatum look at the Ultimate universe.  Look also for the continuation of the powerful Dark Avengers/X-Men crossover, Utopia, in Uncanny X-Men #514.   Read more

Comic Book Releases for July 22nd, 2009

Into the valley of the comic book store rode the 600.  The 600th issues of Amazing Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk that is!  With Doctor Octopus, Daredevil, a wedding and more, Marvel promises great and thrilling reading for fans of the series and those just interested in this milestone issue!  Same goes for the Hulk, except the action involves Red Hulk, Green Hulk AND Spidey!  Springing from Immortal Iron Fist comes Immortal Weapons, five issue limited series!  Also airing this week is another installment in the Halo franchise with Halo: Helljumper, ushering in a new story and new creative team for this video game franchise. Blackest Night #1: Jawdropping

Thank you, Blackest Night #1, for wiping the slate clean, for me at least, after the mess that was Final Crisis.  After not really caring all that much about New Gods, Black Racer, Furies and someone named Libra who hadn’t mattered in years, not to mention feeling that the entire thing could have been told in three issues, max, DC has brought us a true limited series with this first issue of what promises to be an emotionally compelling and action oriented story, Blackest Night. Green Lantern #43 Sets the Terrifying Stage for Blackest Night

The Green Lantern series has seen a major renaissance over the past few years, due to its bold, groundbreaking storytelling and willingness to take major risks with storylines, history and the established and long-standing relationships between major characters.  Stories involving the Sinestro Corps, the Red Lanterns and the test of wills between the Guardians and the rest of the Lanterns have framed this renewed interest and, dare I say, relevance to a title and a hero that had fallen out of the major forefront of the DC universe heavyweights.  All of that has led us to the beginning of Blackest Night, a major, grim storyline emerging out of the pages of Green Lantern this summer and hitting all the major heroes and titles. Comic Book Releases for July 8, 2009

Another week, another set of exciting comic book releases!  This week once again brings several new titles, series, and events!  Let’s jump right in!

Dark Horse Comics expands the Hellboy universe a bit more this week, releasing B.P.R.D.: 1947 #1, a new story focusing on our team of supernatural investigators, this time dealing with the after effects of a vampire on the loose at the end of World War II.  Image Comics releases the trade paperback of Back to Brooklyn this week.  The Garth Ennis and Jimmy Palmiotti penned series is finally collected here, and fans of gritty drama and crime should pick this one up!  The Darkness returns this week with issue #78, and be sure to look for Elephantmen War Toys: Yvette, a one shot focusing on one of the popular characters from the War Toys miniseries.
