Captain America: Reborn #1 Begins a Compelling Puzzle

Just in time for Independence Day comes one of Marvel’s biggest projects of the summer, Captain America: Reborn.  With issue number one coming out today, fans of the series and those who are simply curious about how Marvel plans on executing what seemed to be certain death for the costumed patriot are in for some answers right away in this first issue, as well as an intriguing mystery.

To say that writer Ed Brubaker has shaken up the world of Captain America over the past several months would be an understatement.  With former sidekick James “Bucky” Barnes donning the costume of his former mentor, Brubaker has taken this new Cap on globe-spanning adventures that have explored new facets of the character and have touched on the backgrounds in espionage of not only Bucky, but of supporting characters such as the original Black Widow. Comic Book New Releases for July 1st, 2009

Before you rush off to that Fourth of July barbecue or picnic, be sure to swing by your local comic book shop this Wednesday and pick up these explosive issues from all your favorite publishers, guaranteed to cause plenty of fireworks on their own!

It’s finally here!  For Marvel, the biggest release this week is certainly Captain America: Reborn #1.  The book, with multiple variant covers, is set to be a bestseller, and Marvel has been relatively quiet on what impact this return will have on a Marvel universe currently dealing with the events of Dark Reign.  On the lighter side, Deadpool: Merc With a Mouth debuts, with our anti-hero on a quest to retrieve his own head.  Read the book to find out what that means!  We can’t ruin all the fun!  Not letting the boys have all the fun, Marvel Divas #1 drops into stores, focusing on four of Marvel’s lesser-used female characters.  Also, don’t miss the second chapter in the Dark Avengers/X-Men arc Utopia; get Uncanny XMen #513 Wednesday! Captain America Returning With New Printing

June 18, 2009 · Posted in Captain America, Marvel Comics · 2 Comments

Captain America lives!  Let the second printings begin!  Less than a week after announcing that the Steve Rogers version of Captain America would be returning, Marvel Comics has announced that Captain America #600 will be returning with a second printing.  In an unprecedented move, Marvel allowed many comic book stores to put Captain America #600 on sale on Monday, June 15, which was two days before the normal Wednesday for new comic book releases.

The media publicity and the early release date appears to have paid off, as Captain America #600 sold out from the distributor almost immediately.  In order to meet the demand for this special issue, Marvel will be releasing a second printing variant.

David Gabriel, who is Marvel’s Senior Vice-President of Sales & Circulation said, “First and foremost, I’d like to thank all those retailers who made this amazing event possible by participating in this special advance release on Monday. Despite what might have been the largest overprint we’ve ever done for a book, copies sold out well before even the early on sale date. This is a great indicator for the excitement that we’re anticipating for Captain America Reborn. We’d also like to thank the fans and press for getting behind Captain America #600. Trust me, you’re in for a lot of fun and we’re glad to have you along for the ride!”

Oh, surprise, surprise, the Steve Rogers version of Captain America isn’t really dead.  While many comic book fans will be jumping for joy, I will not be one of the ones celebrating the return of Steve Rogers.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have any overwhelming dislike for Steve Rogers.

It’s just that he was one of the first deaths in comic books that looked like it was going to stick.  The fact that he is now coming back kind of ends all hope that death can ever be taken seriously in a comic book, not that there was much hope before.  While I guess it might ultimately be a good thing that this American icon is being restored to life, there are also several very good reasons why the Steve Rogers version of Captain America should not be brought back.  So to end the suspense, here are my top 5 reasons Captain America should stay dead.
