There was something in the water that said this might happen.  After some tentative speculation, rumors of a relaunch of the Fantastic Four film series are confirmed.  According to Variety, 20th Century Fox will re-boot the two-film series, and it’s unclear at this time if any of the actors and actresses who starred in the first two films, Ioan Gruffud, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, and Michael Chiklis specifically, will reprise their roles in the new series.  Based on the announcement of the new creative talent behind the film, it is perhaps highly unlikely. My Marvel Memories: A Personal Reflection on Marvel’s 70th Birthday

One of the things my late grandfather was always lamenting to me was his treatment of comic books when he was a youngster in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s.  I started collecting comic books when I was in high school, the mid-1990’s, and my grandfather was always quick to tell me about how they used to be a dime, how he couldn’t believe he got rid of them, and of how they burned so many of them for warmth or used them for various bodily functions and household cleaning.

I know for a fact, based on his observations, that several of those long-lost comics came from Marvel, then known as Timely Comics.  The comic book collector/reader/writer I am today cringes when I think of all those lost gems and characters and my grandfather’s memories of them, but I know, on this 70th birthday of Marvel’s, that I will have plenty of my own memories for years to come. Perez Hilton a Comic Book Star in the Making? Why Not?

July 7, 2009 · Posted in Comic Books, DC Comics, Marvel Comics · 1 Comment

Recently I took a look at celebrities, pop culture novelties and politicians who could make intriguing material and subjects for comic books. In doing that, it became readily apparent that one person in particular was already perfectly positioned to be the subject of his own comic book without much polishing or imagination on my part! That person is none other than noted gossip blogger Perez Hilton!

I say this with no intention of mockery at the proclaimed “queen of all media”, but more as a realistic explanation of circumstances, events and people that already exist in his world. Perez Hilton already has all the basics for his own comic book series, no matter what you may personally think of his antics, persona or material from his website, one that he frequently updates and that has thousands upon thousands of readers daily!

Let’s look at the facts, shall we? Read more

Ripped From the Headlines! More Possibilities for Real Life Comic Books!

June 10, 2009 · Posted in Comic Books, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Tomb Raider · 1 Comment

Have comic books gotten out of hand? Are there just too many comic books out there now that are based on real people? If the recent appearance of comics  based on the lives of Barack Obama, John McCain, and Sarah Palin were just the beginning, then can fictional books such as the recent addition Barack the Barbarian be a sign of future endeavors? If that’s the case, then are any real celebrities or politicians safe? Out of the recent group of headline makers, only a few have shots at having their lives exaggerated, only slightly of course, in four-color fabulousness!

With that said, here are our picks for celebrities who could make for interesting reading, using powers based on some of their best (worst?) attributes, in the style of Barack the Barbarian. Read more

Fantastic Four Dark Reign #1: Boom or Bust?

With Dark Reign expanding and expanding, it was only a matter of time before Marvel’s First Family, the Fantastic Four, felt the impact. With Dr. Doom a part of Norman Osborne’s “Dark Illuminati”, there is an expectation that at some point Dr. Doom will be involved in some sort of colossal battle with the Fantastic Four. Fantastic Four: Dark Reign # 1 is sadly not that issue.

Not that this issue doesn’t have some semblance of intrigue and developing plot in it, but it does take quite a bit of time to fully get to where it’s trying to go in the last five pages. We see the story open with our heroes once again having to resettle themselves into a home, after a good portion of the Baxter Building was sucked into the Negative Zone by Lyja, a Skrull and Johnny’s former girlfriend. As Franklin and Valeria Richards head home, Sue frantically tries to ensure that everyone is working to get the house in good working order, even Reed.

Endless Love: 10 Great Comic Book Relationships

Valentine’s Day. The day when we all stop, turn to our beloved and whisper sweet nothings over a candlelit dinner while enjoying wine and chocolates. The stuffed bears may make an appearance later in the evening. Comic book heroes and villains rarely get such opportunities to pause and swoon, which makes their relationships and its ups and downs that much more meaningful. Listed below, in celebration of this Hallmark holiday, are some of the greatest, longest-lasting comic book relationships ever.

1. Clark Kent (Superman) and Lois Lane - When these two crazy, 70-year old kids finally tied the knot in 1996, it was the “I Do” heard round the world. Everyone knows these two characters, but comic fans had followed the struggle of once shy and awkward Clark Kent to get Lois to notice him for years. Through kidnappings, Lois’ initial love of only Superman, Lana Lang, explosions, Doomsday, and the recent events of both Identity and Final Crisis, Lois and Clark have weathered the storm to stand forth as not just the signature couple of the DC Comics Universe, but perhaps even for comics as a whole. Their story is timeless and knows the bounds of no universe.
