Killing not so Softly: Did Green Arrow do the Right Thing?

The dust has more or less settled, literally and figuratively, on the residents of Star City and the members of the Justice League, as the events in Justice League: Cry for Justice #7 and Justice League: Rise and Fall are now out in the open.  Perhaps one of the more shocking Justice League stories ever conceived, Cry for Justice had a swath of violence and loss cut through the DC hero community, courtesy of the villain Prometheus, a man capable of anticipating the powers and skills of his adversaries.  Prometheus’ plan to destroy several prominent cities in the DC universe hits many of the heroes hard, as the targets are their home cities.  In a desperate choice, the League lets Prometheus go in exchange for information on the devices set to destroy the cities, but not before Star City, the home of Green Arrow, falls.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths is Punch-Worthy, Mostly Plot-Worthy

If you’ve been following the DC animated universe closely over the past several years, you’ve seen the range of projects span the various heroes, major and minor, in TV and more recently in made-for-DVD projects.  The latest comes in the form of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.  It’s fitting that the focus on this film deals with travel between two different, yet parallel worlds, as this particular film project was intended to bridge the two worlds of Justice League the animated show and Justice League Unlimited, its successor.  The reworked script for this film is fittingly used to reflect the world of the Justice League, who now sport a slightly different line-up from their TV predecessors, and the world of the Crime Syndicate, their parallel earth villain counterparts.  The plot as to how these two worlds collide has moments of real magic to it, but the true success of the film lies in the, pardon the expression, blow-by-blow action. Just like various “very special episodes”, can’t miss events and other TV specials, a Christmas episode of beloved television shows was, for a long time, a staple of the fall TV schedule, and the episode was sometimes repeated year after year during the show’s run.  Comic book related shows, of the animated and live action sort, are certainly not exempt from this, and over the years there have been a mix of the funny, effective, strange and touching episodes related to the holiday season.  Listed below are a few of the more memorable, for naughty and nice reasons. Comic Book Previews for October 7th, 2009

Before you punch your ticket to Baltimore, Maryland for this weekend’s Baltimore Comic-Con, be sure to stock up on plenty of reading material for your plane, train or automobile travel!  You certainly won’t lack for pages and pages of action this week, and DC kicks things off with an explosion of Bat-titles!  Kicking this off is the first issue of new limited series Batman: Unseen, which promises us a new supervillain to add to Batman’s formidable rogues’ gallery.  Batman Annual #27 and Batman and Robin #5 also drop into stores this Wednesday, and fans should look for a new printing of the landmark graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke, the book that redefined former Batgirl Barbara Gordon’s role in the DCU. Comic Book Previews for the Week of September 23rd, 2009

The days of summer are slowly waning, soon we’ll break out sweaters and jackets, and pumpkins, hopefully not of the bomb variety, will pop up everywhere.  That doesn’t mean we have to slow down our reading of comics, especially THIS week!!  Marvel brings the long-awaited, much-ballyhooed, debut of the new Spider-Woman solo series is HERE!!  Spider-Woman #1 arrives, courtesy of power team Bendis and Maleev.  What will await Jessica Drew as she makes her way in a savage new world?  Dark Reign: The List takes aim at the X-Men this week, and also look for the one-shot Dark Reign: Made Men, which will focus on the lesser villains of Marvel and how Osborn’s world has affected them.  Amazing Spider-Man #606 brings old flame/nemesis/ally The Black Cat back into Spidey’s life, and look for Ms. Marvel #45 as the battle between the original and current Ms. Marvel reaches its climax!   Read more

Before you hit the beach, the mountains or some other locale for the Labor Day holiday, don’t forget to swing by your local comic book shop and pick up this week’s new releases!  Image Comics continues to serve up plenty for fans of their runaway hit series Chew.  Issue four bows this week, along with reprints of the first three issues!  This is your chance to catch up on the adventures of Detective Tony Chu all in one week!  Pete Wentz, frontman for the band Fall Out Boy, sees his co-creation debut this week with the first issue of Fall Out Toy Works, the first in a five issue limited series!  Mice Templar: Destiny #3 also lands in stores this week, giving fans of Image even more to be excited about! Comic Book Releases for August 5th, 2009

August is here!  This first week of our eighth month has lots of comic book action and goodness, so hold on, here we go!

Marvel releases several big issues this week, with Captain America: Reborn #2 continuing the surprising events and twists from Captain America #600 and Reborn #1.  Ultimatum’s finale sees the release of two one shots, wrapping up the stories of the Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four in two separate Requiems.  Black Panther kicks off it’s second arc with issue seven, and expect an interesting run on the limited series Ghost Rider: Heavens Fire, which starts this week as well.  Luke Cage is given an interesting solo story in the creative Luke Cage Noir #1, which sees the hero back home in the Prohibition era!   Read more

DC Announces Major News During Editorial Presentation at Comic-Con

Saturday’s DC Editorial Panel at Comic-Con proved to be one that fans were waiting for.  DC made some major announcements about upcoming projects and characters, many that have already sparked rumors and cries of joy from readers and fans of long established properties, such as the Justice League.  The biggest announcement about DC’s most well-known super team came in the form of a few reveals as to who will be in the lineup for James Robinson’s take on the costumed crimefighters! “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” Gets a Release Date

Another fabled installment of the DC animated universe will be available for purchase this fall.  The previously reported Superman/Batman: Public Enemies has finally received an official release date of September 29, 2009.  The film is based on the Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness stories of the same name, focusing on a world where archvillain Lex Luthor is President of the United States, and Superman is framed for putting the planet in danger.   Read more
